Autoscroll - automatic enable

Steve, W7WM

I have found that there are many times when I disable (inadvertently or not) auto-scroll. Sometime later, I notice the 'blinking' auto-scroll message and re-enable it and proceed.

My problem is that I forget to re-enable auto-scroll and the result is that I miss (until I catch up) many spots. Even worse, my memory is not getting any better,

Would it be reasonable to add a parameter or mechanism to SC that would re-enable auto-scroll after some period (selectable) of time?

Thanks,

-Steve, W7WM

+ It would be better for you to learn to not inadvertently enable auto-scrolling. The left-most column in each row of the Spot Database Display contains cells that are empty, but for a light gray background. Do not click in the cells of this column unless you want Autoscrolling disabled.

Dave,

I think my issue with Autoscroll is similar to Steve's.
  • A spot or callsign announcement draws my attention to the Spot Collector window
  • I mouse-over the center of the SC window and use the mouse wheel to scroll back and find the packet spot of interest
  • SC freezes the display so I can focus on the item
  • The blue Autoscroll warning starts flashing
  • Unfortunately, I rarely remember to manually click that Autoscroll warning before leaving SC
  • Packet spot arrivals have stopped
Is there some method that would automagically reset Autoscroll? A timer? Upon mouse leaving packet window? Upon SC loosing program focus? Anything would be better than relying on my remembering...

If clicking in the left-hand column was the only way to disable auto-scroll, I would be all set. It is the other ways of disabling auto-scroll (manually scrolling up, down, left, right) that catch me. How about making auto-scroll enable/disable only by clicking in the left gray column?

Your point of my learning not to disable it is a good one, except after 10+ years of using DXLab, I haven't learned. :-)

+ To everyone interested in this discussion: How about I add a new option to SpotCollector that determines whether or not horizontal or vertical scrolling the Spot Database Display automatically disables auto-scroll in the Spot Database Display? This new option would default to the current behavior: scrolling disables auto-scroll.

+ Another alternative: an option that when enabled causes Joe DX to begin repetitively announce "autoscroll disabled!" -- like an aircraft's stall warning

Temporarily disabling autoscroll when one has used the mouse scroll
wheel is a good thing. However, it needs a timeout so autoscroll
is re-enabled after a period of time 60-300 seconds of no mouse
activity.

The "stall warning" is over the top - and would need a delay timer
(so it does not start the instant auto scroll is disabled) in any
case.

+ Here's a third alternative: a new option that, when enabled, automatically enables auto-scroll when a new Spot Database Entry is created with its Needed field containing one or more characters (meaning that that a confirmed QSO with the Entry's station would advance your progress towards the awards you're pursuing on the bands and modes you're pursuing them)?

Auto re enabling it after 90 seconds or so is a good idea as well

I have deleted my previous response and retract my vote on the option to disable.

My favorite is to limit disabling auto-scroll, ONLY if you click on the gray column. If you want to disable it.....explicitly disable it.

I do like the option to disable the left/right/up/down causing disabling auto-scroll. This would support my favorite and leave the current behavior the same.

Re-enabling based on new input seems much more complicated. A timer would be simpler (I think).

+ I expect that re-enabling auto-scroll based on the creation of a new, "needed" Spot Database Entry would be straightforward to implement. Any scheme involving a time requires enabling the user to specify a duration, which increases user-perceived complexity.

+ When commenting on which option you consider the most beneficial, please ignore any concerns regarding "difficulty of implementation".

Respectfully, I am voting for the first option of determining whether or not horizontal or vertical scrolling auto-disables auto-scroll.  As for the other option, not everyone I assume is using audible Joe DX announcements and I count myself in that group.
