+ Using the N1MM-DXKeeper Gateway is certainly more convenient than exporting/importing all new contest QSOs at the end of a contest -- but it does add time to the process of logging a QSO, which may not be desirable if maximizing the QSO rate is the primary objective.

How does a CW contester log contacts at high speeds running 2 or 3 contacts per minute?
I know that is to fast for hand logging so it must be automatic. How does that work?

+ With default signal reports enabled, you can log a QSO in DXKeeper's Capture window by typing each letter of the callsign, striking the Enter key, and striking CTRL-L. With callbook lookups deferred until the end of the operating session, a hunt-and-peck typist can accomplish that in 10 seconds, supporting a rate of 6 QSOs per minute. Enable the Run-mode option and log via the Main window's "Log QSOs" tab, and the need to strike CTRL-L is eliminated, further increasing the rate. Logging from WinWarbler is even faster, as callsigns can be recorded by clicking on decoded text; see

+ Serious contesting, however, requires more than just logging callsigns. The correct transmit exchange for the current contest must be sent, and the received exchange must be recorded in a way that facilities Cabrillo generation after the contest is over. Realtime score-keeping enables the user to optimize his or her actions during the contest. Logging applications specialized for contesting - like ACLog, DXLog, N1MM, WinTest, and WriteLog - provide these capabilities. DXKeeper's support for contesting is limited to generating the correct transmit exchange, recording the receive exchange, and generating Cabrillo files so that DXers participating in a contest in search of "needed new ones" can fulfill their obligations to the participants in that contest. No realtime scoring is provided.

+ Many contesters use a logging application specialized for contesting, and then export/import their contest QSOs to DXKeeper after the contest is over. OK, I use DXLabs DXKeeper for my log but I have to manually  transfer my paper log  into DXKeeper. Is there a way to enter the log info directly onto DXKeeper in real time?
That would certainly make things easier! I have no need for a Carrillo file. As you can probably tell, I am a diehard paper logger but I am looking for a way to move up.

Most of us use software specifically designed for contesting, like N1MM+. Minimal data entry is required for each contact- generally call sign and whatever unique exchange info for that contest (state, name, number, or whatever). All other items like time, band frequency, etc are automated. All the common items you need to send  (CQ, your call, your exchange, etc) are programmed into dedicated function keys and the computer does the keying, so your hands never leave the keyboard.
The limiting factor is how well you can copy the calls and exchanges accurately the first time without asking for fills, and whether you can get your fingers to enter it at the same time.  I'm still working on that part :)

No.  A general logging program, like DXLabs has many more features, such as awards tracking, contains much more information about each contact, etc. which you will really use.  N1MM+ generates the Carrillo file which you use to enter the contest and an ADIF file which you import into your general logging program (DXLabs).  I then use DXLabs to upload my QSOs to Logbook of the World for chasing DX countries and grid squares.  Other general logging programs I.e. ACLog work in a similar fashion.

There are a number of contest logging programs designed for that purpose.  I prefer N1MM Logger +.  Maintaining a QSO rate of between 40 and 100 QSOs per hour is relatively easy , assuming your station transmits a strong signal.  Much higher QSO rates are possible with a skilled operator using a good station.
