using ve7cc user with Spotcollector

+ In general, the latter. What sort of "configure the cluster" do you
have in mind?
The CC Cluster software generally sets up server side filtering. It
is redundant if the user studies the filter setting commands and
builds them into SpotCollector's Initial Cluster Command.

The server side filtering is generally not necessary *unless* the
user turns on skimmer spots - FT8 during daily operation, RTTY
during a RTTY contest or CW during a major CW contest.

I have found it is generally best to enable skimmer spots from only
one cluster (due to duplication), perform server side filtering to
limit skimmer spots from a narrow set of skimmers (e.g., US only,
zone 4/5 only or a limited number of states (e.g. W4 only). In
addition, I user SC's prefilter to dump *SKIMMER* spots of US Stations
unless I'm playing around with a domestic contest (SS, State QSO Party,
RTTY Roundup, etc.) and dump *SKIMMER* spots for bands I don't work
(mostly 60m, 8m and > 5m).

Jamie,

You can run CC User to connect to the node and connect to CC User from SpotCollector or use CC User to create different “profiles” (e.g., WW3S, WW3S-20), close CC User and connect directly to the node from SpotCollector.  I do the latter, having set up lots of different profiles at VE7CC and AE5E.

For instance, I connect to the node as N7US in SpotCollector, using the general profile I’ve created for daily operating, and I connect from N1MM as N7US-20, which is set up for CW contests.

You can additionally filter in SpotCollector (or N1MM).
