Commander 3.1.7 is now available as a full release

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

Re: Commander 3.1.7 is available

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

My pleasure, Rich. Thanks for all of your help.

I'll package it all up into a full release; then you can tell your FT817
buddies about it.

Yup, you got it this time on both counts. It took a few go rounds but to
do
a task this tricky with incomplete documentation and not having the

This release should set both FT817 VFOs to the same frequency and mode
when you click Commander's A=B button. Selecting a Commander memory
should set an FT817 to the stored frequency and mode.

To upgrade, see http://www.qsl.net/civ_commander/development.htm -
you'll be downloading

Yes Sir, that was (is) the secret, A = B now works. Just one little
glitch,
it doesn't maintain the mode. I.E.: if A was on CW and B was on USB,
they
remain that way after A = B. Hopefully, that's not too hard to
rectify.

One other thing I have noticed is that when you use the memories to
save
a
favorite frequency/mode. When you click "set" it sets the frequency OK
but
does not set the mode. I think it's possible that this is a delay
situation
also. A feature of this radio is that it remembers the mode it was in
on
for
each band/VFO. When you switch to a band, it sets itself to whatever
mode
was last used on that band. So, I think what's happening is that
commander
is setting the mode and then the radio sets it back to it's own
remembered
value. So, you have to wait for the radio to do it's thing and then
change
it. I would guess that might be about a 1/2 second delay also.

I have used for some time now a USB/Serial Port converter made by Entrega.
It provides two additional USB ports plus 4 serial ports. It works very
well with W98SE.

I have also just recently added the SIIG 5-port PCI card to my Windows Me
system but I have not had occasion to use it yet. Installation was
unremarkable.

I guess the next step is a PC Card for the laptop which is old enough to
have a serial port but no USB port! <:}

Kurt,

Using the parallel port for rig control would be extremely difficult.
All modern transceivers use a serial protocol; emulating this
accurately
on a parallel port would require very low-level programming, starting
with the creation of a Windows driver.

What is your laptop's one serial port being used for now? You could
add
an external RS232 switch and multiplex the port between devices that
you
don't use simultaneously.

If you must have simultaneous access to multiple devices, then you
must
add more serial ports to your laptop. There are three ways to do this:

1. Buy a port replicator or docking station from IBM - these
typically include at least one more serial port
2. Buy a PCMCIA card serial port interface
3. If your laptop has a USB interface, buy a USB serial port
adaptor

I have used a Belkin USB adaptor with my Toshiba laptop and it works
fine.

Good luck,

- supports the VFO A and B buttons for the Kenwood TS940S (verified

- interposes the poll interval between operations required to
perform A=B on an FT817; perhaps the A=B button will at last work.

Re: TS940S support

dhbernstein <dhb@...>

That's what I needed to know -- it means that Commander has properly
determined that its talking to a 940S, and should be using the N
command rather than the FR/FT commands to select a VFO.

Jim, have you ever used HyperTerminal? Its a terminal emulator that
is included with Windows. Since Kenwood's rig control protocol is
entirely character based, one can actually try out commands by simply
typing them. We could test a few things this way more rapidly than
the "one guess per Commande release" approach we've been taking.

difference. I normally run it at 9600.

Commander' VFO doesn't change after the first toggle; sending a command
to the 817 to toggle VFOs doesn't send the new VFO's frequency back to
commander.

I'll try interposing long delays between the three steps to see if that'
the issue., though each command requires the transmission of at least 16
bits which takes at least ~20 ms. Experiment: try reducing the CAT
interface baud rate to 300 baud and see if that makes a difference with
the A=B button.

Perhaps I don't understand what you mean by "Commanders's VFO" but after
you
do the first toggle, doesn't it become the frequency of the second VFO?
Thus
when you set the frequency, it's just re-setting the current VFO to it's
own
frequency.

Yes it only toggles once, not twice. Do you suppose it might be a timing
thing? Perhaps some time is needed for the radio to settle down before
issuing the frequency change and/or second toggle. To this end, I tried
changing the polling rate but it made no difference. No, there is no
error
log.

The code for A=B does the following

1. toggle VFOs

2. set the FT817's current VFO to the frequency in Commander's
VFO

3. toggle VFOs

The fact that you are seeing the VFO's toggle implies that only one of
the "toggle VFO" commands is actually happening; is there an error log
in Commander's directory?

Well sorry to say that A = B on V 3.1.4 still just toggles the VFO's.
Does
not set frequency.

Just hooked up a sound card audio cable on the FT-817 and tried PSK31
on
it
with WinWarbler. Works great!! This rig is quite easy to hook up for
PSK
because it has sound in/out levels consistent with typical sound
cards.
Thus, no special interface is needed. The PTT control via Cat cable
from
WinWarbler is working fine so that eliminates another pesky problem.

Re: Commander 3.1.4 is available

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

Commander' VFO doesn't change after the first toggle; sending a command
to the 817 to toggle VFOs doesn't send the new VFO's frequency back to
commander.

I'll try interposing long delays between the three steps to see if that'
the issue., though each command requires the transmission of at least 16
bits which takes at least ~20 ms. Experiment: try reducing the CAT
interface baud rate to 300 baud and see if that makes a difference with
the A=B button.

Re: Commander 3.1.4 is available

An additional thought. When you press A = B on the front panel controls, it
is necessary to hold the button down for 1/2 second. I don't know if that's
done just to prevent you from doing it accidentally or if there is some real
technical reason for it. It could be the latter.

Re: Commander 3.1.4 is available

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

The TS2000 documentation describes the FR and FT commands as changing
the current VFO selection (for the receiver and transmitter
respectively). The documentation you sent describes the N command as
changing the current VFO selection. I use the radio's identification
code to determine which of these commands to use. As a first step in
debugging, lets see if Commander has correctly determined that its
talking to a TS940S; what's the text in Commander's title bar?

Hello Dave, We still are having no response from the A or B
buttons for the Kenwood TS-940S and I suspect the 440S as well. All
other functions work well. Let me know when you want me to test
again for the 940. Was the documentation I emailed the right
thing?? I know it was kinda hard to read.
