Re: Runtime Error 339???

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

Before Bob proceeds with the suggestion below, is anyone else experiencing
this behaviour?

Assuming that you were once able to change buttons without error, this
sounds like your Pathfinder4 installation has in some way become corrupt. I
suggest that you un-install and then re-install version 4.0.1 via steps 4,
5, and 6 of http://www.qsl.net/pathfinder/DownloadInstall.htm ; your search
library and button settings should survive this process. If you had
previously upgraded to 4.0.2 (or 4.0.3), the file Pathfinder402.exe (or
Pathfinder403.exe) will remain in your Pathfinder4 folder and can be used
immediately after 4.0.1 is installed.

Let me know how it goes...

Happy New Year 2002........

I wonder if you might have an idea as to why when I try to
change a button, from say, DXNL, to DXS 2001, I get an
Run-time error msg.# 329 component COMDLG32.ocx or one of
it's dependencies not correctly registered a file is missing

Re: SpotCollector 1.1.7 is available

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

Its possible that you just happened to miss updates, but seems unlikely. The
defect I corrected in 1.1.7 resulted in certain information from the cluster
not being "inspected"; I noticed this when testing the SH/DX functionality.
It never missed DX spots, but might cause some WWV spots to be missed,
depending somewhat upon machine configuration.

The question is, did you ever see a WWV announcement in a cluster window
without also seeing the solar data updated in the main SpotCollector window?

While we're on the subject of spot filtering, a really nice
feature that
will be in the new Logger32 is the ability to capture data
resulting from
a
"Sh/DX XX" command in the spot window. It's really nice when
you are just
starting up for the day to be able to put recently issued
spots in the
spot
window and in this case also on the map :-)

I'd been meaning to get back to you on this, Mike. I instrumented
SpotCollector so I could see each incoming WWV report from each telnet
cluster. They are all identical, and seem to be working fine; in
particular,
DX-Central is working fine. There isn't any filtering of WWV reports, so
that's not the explanation.

What version of SpotCollector are you running now? Is there an

I guess the next step is for me to send you an instrumented version so we
can track down the defect.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Hi Dave (et al):

Been thinking about my previous report of no updates to WWV sports since
November 23 (@ 0300Z).

I believe that 11/23 coincides with installation of v112. Not sure if
that has anything to do with it, but I think v112 was the release that
fixed the problem of the "non-saving" filters. I've always limited
spot origins to North America. Could it be that, previous to v112, the
spots (including WWV info) were coming in from other sources because the
filters were not blocking? Now that the origin filters are working,
perhaps this is why I'm no longer getting WWV info?

As an experiment, I'll open 'er up here to all spots, regardless of
origin, band or mode.

BTW, I usually monitor just two sources: DX-Centeral and worldirc. I
was also monitoring only these two when the WWV info was being updated.

Thank you for your persistence and willingness to help!

Another Pathfinder4 search file update problem

Dave, AA6YQ <dhb@...>

Uli ZS6IR reported that my correcting the "Last Search Library Update" date
did not result in his Pathfinder offering to download new search files. When
I asked Uli to check http://www.qsl.net/pathfinder/Greetings.htm, he
reported that the "Last Search Library Update" date was 9 Oct 2001. I
suggested that he click his browser's refresh button and, if the date
changed, run Pathfinder again. He reported that refreshing the page updated
the "Last Search Library Update" to 02-Jan-2002; he then ran Pathfinder, and
was offered the search file update.

Whenever you view a web page with Internet Explorer, it keeps a copy in a
folder on your hard drive. You can set the maximum size of this folder; when
the folder becomes full, Internet Explorer discards copies of the oldest web
pages to make room for new web page copies. All of this is done to optimize
performance. Whenever you direct your browser to view a web page -- either
by entering a URL or clicking on a hyperlink -- Internet Explorer first
checks its cache of web pages on your hard drive; if it finds a copy of the
requested web page there, then it displays that copy rather than download
it.

This is a fine strategy for web pages whose content doesn't change much over
time, but its clearly backfiring with Pathfinder, which uses Internet
Explorer to display web pages bearing date-sensitive information -- like
whether new search files are available. As it turns out, one can add
information to a web page that effectively says "don't cache me". I have
added this to Greetings.htm. This should eliminate the problem for new
users, but you've already got a copy of Greetings.htm on your hard drive,
and that copy does not say "don't cache me". To correct this, visit
http://www.qsl.net/pathfinder/Greetings.htm with Internet Explorer and then
click the Refresh button. If running Pathfinder4 didn't previously offer to
update your search files, it will now.

Dave, AA6YQ

This version provides support for year-specific searches, as proposed below.
A new search file named DXSall will downloaded when you next run Pathfinder;
when executed on version 4.0.3, this search refers to the SearchYear combo

If you are using Pathfinder4, you'll get a new DXS search command the next
time you fire up; this new DXS search checks for DXS spots in the year
2002.
You'll also get a DXS01 search file that lets you check for DXS spots in
the
year 2001.

As his message below, Uli suggests adding 4 more search buttons to
Pathfinder so he has one button access to several years worth of DXS
searches. There are two problems with adding more buttons:

1. I'd either have to expand the window horizontally (exceeding the
capabilities of a VGA monitor) or add a third row of search buttons
(reducing the amount of QSL route information visible on a VGA monitor) or
make the search buttons smaller

2. There are only 12 function keys; adding more search buttons would
mean
a less-than-optimal mapping of keys to searches

Pondering the tradeoff, another approach came to mind: add a small "Year"
control, and replace all the different DXS searches with one search that
refers to the Year control. The contents of the year control would be
retained between sessions, so checking DXS would only require changing the
contents of the year control if you wanted to search a year other than the
one you typically check. I'd probably make this control one in which you
chose from among several choices, rather than one in which you actually
enter the actual digits. I propose to make room for it by shortening the
callsign textbox, which looks to be about twice as wide as is typically
required.

Comments? Better ideas?

In the Pathfinder Web Client, I just added a DXS02 button and left the
DXS01
and DXS00 buttons in place.

I have not yet created a search library update for Pathfinder3. If no one
complains, its a good indication that most users have moved to version 4.

Happy New Year, Ron.

The development history for DXView is in
http://www.qsl.net/dxview/versions.htm -- its shows the most recent version
to be 1.4.1.

http://www.qsl.net/dxview/development.htm explains where to find the latest
development version, which in this case is
http://www.qsl.net/dxview/DXView141Update.exe .

Dave, AA6YQ
