Re: Spectrum Waterfall config

Joe Subich, W4TV

The documentation says "Primary CAT Port configured for 115,200
baud" and I can get the CAT DigiKeyer CAT port to read 115,200 baud,
but there is no sign of the waterfall.
The maximum operating rate of the Icom CI-V (Remote) port is 19,200
baud.

Joe W4TV will jump in if I have this wrong, but all you need to do is
reconfigure Commander to use a direct USB connection to your IC-7300
instead of using the microHAM DigiKeyer II's transceiver control
mechanism. You can continue to use all of the other microHAM
DigiKeyer II functionality.
There are functions built into microHAM USB Device Router - particularly
those associated with memory operation and audio switching - that rely
on knowing the transceiver's operating mode. Bypassing Router and DK II
(or MK II, MK2R+) for radio control and (serial port) PTT will
negatively impact operation of the microHAM device.

Subject: [dxlab] Spectrum Waterfall config
I have an Icom 7300 and would like to enable the spectrum waterfall.
I have an external interface for digimodes, the microHAM DigiKeyer II. This does add some complexity to the setup in that there is one more place where one can change a baud rate and more com ports. I have no problems using Commander otherwise.
The documentation says "Primary CAT Port configured for 115,200 baud" and I can get the CAT DigiKeyer CAT port to read 115,200 baud, but there is no sign of the waterfall.
I would be grateful if anybody could point me in the right direction.

Joe W4TV will jump in if I have this wrong, but all you need to do is reconfigure Commander to use a direct USB connection to your IC-7300 instead of using the microHAM DigiKeyer II's transceiver control mechanism. You can continue to use all of the other microHAM DigiKeyer II functionality.
Please do the following:
0. disconnect the plug from the CI-V port on your IC-7300's backpanel (this is what the DigiKeyer II uses to convey CAT commands from Commander, which it will no longer receive)
1. Open the "COM Ports" section of the Windows Control Panel's "Device Manager", and note what COM ports are currently present
2. If you haven't already installed the IC-7300's USB device driver that was included on a DVD accompanying your IC-7300, do so (follow the instructions Icom has provided)
3. Using a standard USB A-B cable, connect your IC-7300 to your PC
4. Open the "COM Ports" section of the Windows Control Panel's "Device Manager", and identify the new COM port now present
5. Open the IC-7300's Menu and make the following changes in the Connector section:
"CI-V USB Port" => "Unlink from [REMOTE]"
"CI-V USB Baud rate" => 115200
6. In the "Primary CAT Serial Port" panel on the Ports tab of Commander's Configuration window,
6a. set the Port# selector to the new COM port you identified in step 4 above
6b. set the Baud selector to 115200
7. verify that Commander can control and track your IC7300's frequency and mode
8. on the Configuration window's Bandspread tab, check the "Spectrum-Waterfall window" box in the upper-left corner; Commander's "Spectrum-Waterfall" window should appear
9. in the "Spectrum-Waterfall window", increase the "Ref Level" slider until you see a spectrum display
Please let me know how it goes...

Correction: the new version of Commander is 13.0.8, not 13.0.7.

Be sure to review the Notes below before upgrading!

This release

- includes a new version of the Scomm32 serial port control that works correctly at 112,000 baud

- when setting or clearing dual watch for an IC7800, IC7850, or IC7851, sends only one CI-V command per command interval

- on startup, reliably displays active DX stations on the Bandspread window (tnx to Björn SM7IUN)

- when changing memory banks with memory notes displayed, correctly updates the Sel button tooltips (tnx to Brian N5BCN)

- saves the Yaesu "Filter Group Data File" pathname to the Windows Registry when the Select or Save functions are activated (tnx to
John N4DSP)

- enables the Yaesu "Filter Group Data File" Save button when the a new Filter Group is added or deleted (tnx to John N4DSP)

- restores the ability to delete an entry in a frequency-dependent device table by selecting the entry and striking the Delete key
(tnx to Björn SM7IUN)

- when controlling a Yaesu FTDX1200 or FTDX3000, enables the Filter panel's Width slider to select and display 2400 Hz when in CW
mode (tnx to Mike K2CD)

- when pushing a frequency and mode onto a band stack, pushes the correct mode (tnx to Tim NZ8J)

- changes the shortcut for resetting the connection to the Primary Transceiver to depressing the CTRL and SHIFT keys while clicking
the Main window's Config button (tnx to Björn SM7IUN)

- supports the "memory channel" in Kenwood radios

- when controlling an Icom radio, illuminates a "CI-V" alert indicator on the Main window when the radio reports a CI-V bus
collision

- supports the Icom IC-7610 (tnx to Tim NZ8J)

- optionally displays a Spectrum-Waterfall window with active DX stations when controlling a properly connected and configured Icom
IC-7300, IC-7610, IC-7850, and IC-7851 (tnx to Björn SM7IUN, Tim NZ8J, Art W2NRA, CJ WT2P, Jay W5JAY, Ron KF5JRA, Rick WA7BNG, Tom
N1MM, and Icom's Ray N9JA)

- provides primary transceiver selection-by-band for 23cm

- supports the Flex 6400 and 6600 (tnx to Flex's Eric KE5DTO)

- if a frequency-dependent device is disabled, invoking  in a Command Sequence loads the device's data
from the "Data File" pathname specified on the device's tab on the Configuration window (tnx to Björn SM7IUN)

- adds the Spectrum-Waterfall.jpg documentation file and updates the ChangingBandwidth.htm, ChangingFrequency.htm,
CommandSequences.htm, Configuration.htm, and index.htm documentation files

Notes:

1. Before upgrading, terminate Commander, DXView, SpotCollector and WinWarbler

2. Update your firewall and anti-malware applications to consider this new version of Commander to be "safe"

3. If Commander is controlling an Icom IC-7300, IC-7610, IC-7850, or IC-7851 using a direct USB connection configured for 115,200
baud, you can enable the new Spectrum-Waterfall window by checking the "Spectrum-Waterfall window" box in the upper-left corner of
the Configuration window's Bandspread tab

3a. reference documentation for the Spectrum-Waterfall window is available in
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/commander/Help/ChangingFrequency.htm#Changing_frequency_via_the_Spectrum-Waterfall_window

3b. a screen shot of the Spectrum-Watefall window is available in http://www.dxlabsuite.com/commander/Help/Spectrum-Waterfall.jpg

3c. if your Icom IC-7300, IC-7610, IC-7850, or IC-7851 is connected to your computer using a USB connection configured for 115,200
baud, you can display new Spectrum-Waterfall window by depressing the CTRL key while clicking the Bandspread button on Commander's
Main window

4. If this upgrade doesn't work correctly, see the "After an Upgrade" section of
<http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/ApplicationStoppedWorking>

5. After upgrading, to revert to the previous version of Commander, see
<http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/RevertApplicationVersion>

Björn,

I am a very old Windows martyr. Believe me, I tried everything – nothing worked short of turning it off and then on again. They probably forget to replace something – file, registry or such. Which is replaced only after turning it off then on.

Would be nice to catch an MS system programmer for questioning – but that’s like questioning a single cell of a tyrannosaur about what makes the beast tick…

Dave, I tried your suggestion. In safe mode all DXLab apps behave normally performance wise, including the Spot Collector. I am talking: drastic improvement comparing to full windows.

I’m running: Windows 10 build 17063, i7 Quad Core 4770, 16GB RAM, OB GPU Intel 4600.

CPU load wise: DXLab processes are below 0.5, Spot Collector sometimes jumps to 12-13. Even so, it doesn’t look like CPU load is the problem.

Video wise: SC is flickering and even is interfering with typing this message. Any further advise?

The error log indicates that your radio is not responding to commands sent by Commander.

It also looks like you have the radio's "CI-V tranceive" menu setting enabled, which should not be the case. The radio frequency should have been set to 7005, but 10 seconds after Commander started, the radio -- without being asked -- reported its frequency to be 14218.823.

Until basic frequency and mode tracking are working, there's no point debugging spectrum data reporting.

If so, please attach it to an email message, and send it to me via

If there isn't an errorlog.txt file in your Commander folder, then

1. on the Configuration window's General tab, check the "log debugging info" box

2. terminate Commander

3. set the radio to 7005 in CW

4. start Commander

5. on the Configuration window's Bandspread tab, check the "Spectrum-Waterfall window" box in the upper-left corner

6. wait 10 seconds

7. using Commander's Main window, set the frequency to 14200 and the mode to USB

if i move the frequency in the radio, commander follows suite.
However, I am having the following issues:
1- on the commander spectrum waterfall display, there is absolutely no information. No dx spots and no waterfall, although i moved the ref level and gain.
2- if i click any band button on the spectrum , commander changes to the selected frequency, bandspread also, some stations are shown on the bandspread but not on waterfall, BUT the radio does not change frequency to the selected band. i.e the radio remained in the previous frequency. Now, radio is on 14,200 and i selected the band on the waterfall to be 40m and commander shows 7,075. if ui slightly move the frequency dial on the radi, the commander jumps back to 14,200 and bandspread follows suite,
3- if i double click any spot dx station on spot collector, commander changes freq to the spot freq, WW also, all dx lab suite reacts accordingly, but radio remains at the previously set freq (in this case 14,200) again if i move slightly the dial on the radio, freq is re established in dx lab suite to follw radios's i.e. 14,200.

I must have forgotten to select or unselect some options. please note that I changed in the radio the Connector settings as you recommended in the wiki doc you sent .

all the best
Merry Christmas

Re: ICOM 7300 waterfall config

The error log indicates that your radio is not responding to commands sent by Commander.

It also looks like you have the radio's "CI-V tranceive" menu setting enabled, which should not be the case. The radio frequency should have been set to 7005, but 10 seconds after Commander started, the radio -- without being asked -- reported its frequency to be 14218.823.

Until basic frequency and mode tracking are working, there's no point debugging spectrum data reporting.

Is there an errorlog.txt file in your Commander folder?

If so, please attach it to an email message, and send it to me via

aa6yq (at) ambersoft.com

If there isn't an errorlog.txt file in your Commander folder, then

1. on the Configuration window's General tab, check the "log debugging info" box

2. terminate Commander

3. set the radio to 7005 in CW

4. start Commander

5. on the Configuration window's Bandspread tab, check the "Spectrum-Waterfall window" box in the upper-left corner

6. wait 10 seconds

7. using Commander's Main window, set the frequency to 14200 and the mode to USB

8. wait 10 seconds

9. on the Configuration window's General tab, uncheck the "log debugging info" box

10. attach the errorlog.txt file from your Commander folder to an email message, and send it to me via
