I am just starting to use fldigi and installed the dxlab gateway to link it to my dxlab suite. When I installed the gateway, i set the path to the fldigi.exe file and clicked save and the setup immediately launched fldigi and fllog and closed itself down. I have not been able to keep it open long enough to complete the set of the gateway. I can launce gateway again after fldigi is open, but the setup is locked, cannot make any changes.

The link from fldigi to dx commander is on except for the modes. My FT-991A uses data-up for data modes, and but gets change to usb when sent from fldigi. I change it back to data-usb with commander, so it appears that fldigi is either not sending the right command or is not sending any command other than frequency.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this, or point me to someone that can help?

I also use VSPE to virtualize only the PTT port (COM4 -> COM7) so that both WinWarbler and WSJT-X can use it. Of course, when I use one I don't use the other.

+ That's fine.

Just to try, turn temporarily off VSPE and assign the Windows port of your rotator interface to DxView. I bet that you will correctly see the reported direction.

+ I sent David the next version of DXView, which interprets both forms of Yaesu rotator position reporting; running this new version gives him position reporting.

And as Dave said in his reply, it's not a good idea to have multiple applications to access the same resource at the same time. What if an application turns your antenna clockwise and the other wants to turn it the opposite direction?

- Ability to for multiple applications to use the device at the same time such as DXLab, N1MM, SATPC32, etc.

+ You cannot use a virtual port to enable multiple applications to control the same radio simultaneously. It doesn't work! Consider this scenario, for example:

application 1: select VFO A

application 2: select VFO B

application 1: report current frequency

radio: reports VFO B's frequency

application 1: incorrectly interprets radio's response as VFO A's frequency

+ Generalizing, one application can change the radio's state behind the other application's back, causing incorrect results. Transceiver control applications are not designed to monitor commands being sent by another application to the same transceiver.

+ DXLab can be configured to directly interoperate with SATPC32; see

https://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/SatelliteTracking

+ DXLab can also interoperate with N1MM; see

https://www.dxlabsuite.com/N1MM-DXKeeper/index.htm

I think that you were addressing this to me KW1DX and not Dave AA6YQ so I will give you my answer.

I first started using the virtual port simulator because I had a few devices that multiple applications wanted to use and that can't be done using the actual port. Over time it became easier to just have all devices using virtual ports.

Positives
- Ability to for multiple applications to use the device at the same time such as DXLab, N1MM, SATPC32, etc.
- Some applications use the device all the time and thus lock out others, the virtual port allows all applications to share it.
- Sometimes windows would change the port number on me (usually this happened when I needed to physically remove the device from the PC). Using the virtual port all I need to do is change the port number in the virtual port application not each individual application.
- The virtual port application separates the devices from Windows which in many cases is much easier to deal with than Windows.
Negatives
- More complicated to set up. I have a spreadsheet that I maintain that maps the actual port to the virtual port to the devices that use it
- Some time multiple applications using the same device conflict with each other. This mainly happens with the rig control software so I need to have only one running at a time. (Note: I had found sometimes before using the virtual port that if I had two applications trying to use the same port then the port would hang up and I would have to reboot, this became annoying very fast)

The application I use is VSPE Virtual Serial Ports Emulator, www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html. It was not too expensive and does everything I needed. It does other things too but I have not used it for anything else.

Hope that answers your question if you want more information just let me know.

David,

I'm running the same version of DXView and I have almost the same settings that you have, a Yaesu rotator (2800-DXC) and a different interface (ERC-M) but I cannot see any problem and bearing is correctly shown, so I'm wondering why you are using a virtualized COM port instead of directly using the assigned port (that you can change if you wish).
Are you splitting the Windows port to make the rotator available to two programs simultaneously?

The interface I'm using has an FTDI chip and has been assigned COM6 port by Windows and that's the port that I have set in DXView. If you don't have particular requirements, try to use the Windows port directly.

ok i think its working, i had jtalert uploading to clublog and had auto upload ticked in dxkeeper qsl config.

+ In that case, disable JTAlert's uploading to Club Log and leave DXKeeper's enabled. That way, each QSO uploaded to Club Log will be have its Club item set to 'Y'.
