Microsoft Power Toys for Windows XP

Below is a copy of a message from the RTTY reflector regarding the ability to gain screen real-estate using a Microsoft option package. I have not tried this specific utility. I am using a different piece of this software package (Power Toys for XP) and that utility works as advertised. This software is free, but it is unsupported.

There was discussion on this reflector a while back about using "workspaces" and other tricks to restore screen configurations. This utility might be an alternative for some folks.

With the myriad of logging, contest, propagation and other programs that have become a part of amateur radio, your computer screen real estate is a valuable asset. This is particularly true for those using a laptops as well as traditional PCs. So here is an option that may help if you run the Windows XP series operating system. Microsoft offers, for free, a feature call, ?Microsoft Power Toys for Windows XP?. Among several nice tools is one called, ?Virtual Desktop Manager?. It allows you to select between four differently configured desktop arrangements. For example, one desktop could be your DXpedition or contest logging program while the next could be a propagation program and so on up to four desktop configurations. Each is selected by the click of a radio button at the bottom of the screen. Therefore, you can virtually expand the size of you computer screen with the click of the mouse.

You can download the utility at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

?Virtual Desktop Manager? is near the bottom of the page.

I think the jest of it is even the top honcho at PC Magazine is vocalizing frustration and disappointment in the new OS. It usually takes quite a bit of agony to bring the tech-heads to admit their dissatisfaction.

I am beginning to think I retire from the IT world "just in time." :-)

No. When you worked them they were Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia became
Serbia as the other ethnic groups achieved independence (split
from) Yugoslavia. Any credits for Yugoslavia count for Serbia -
the government in Serbia still holds the old Yugoslav seat in the

Darn! I was hoping for a freebie!

If you've been around long enough, you may have Netherlands Antilles
credit for a contact in Aruba before 1986. If you were to work the
same station today, it would count for P4 Aruba. The situation is
the same (independence).
Guess I missed that one, but there's always hope that someone will get bored and send a card that I don't remember! <G>

SDR1K

Steve Nance

Recently I remember a post where someone was having trouble getting the
right mode when clicking a spot in spotcollector when using an SDR1K.
Something to the effect of when clicking a RTTY spot would put the SDR1K
into LSB instead of DIGL where it needed to be. I think this was attributed
to the CAT commands for the SDR not being able to shift the modes properly,
but I can't remember and I haven't been able to find the post(s).

Anyway I was wondering if this problem was solved and if so how was it done.

For some reason, the card record sheet listed Hawaii twice,
and continental United States on 6 meters twice, once for SSB and
once for CW. Is there something I may have set wrong to make this
happen? Dave, for a basic DXCC, I go into DXKeeper,

right? I had CW checked before when I generated the submission.

Yes, unchecking all the band and mode boxes in "DXCC/Top Bands and
Modes" is correct. I'm not clear on whether you had the CW box
checked when you generated the card record sheet. My advice is to
regenerate the card record sheet now that you have all the band and
mode boxes in "DXCC/Top Bands and Modes" cleared. If there are still
what appears to be two Hawaiian and US QSOs on the record sheet, then

1. open DXKeeper's Main window's "Log QSOs" tab

2. enable the Aux panel so you'll be able to see the full name of the
currently-selected QSO's DXCC entity

3. examine the two Hawaiian QSOs that appear in on the record sheet;
what DXCC entity is shown for each?

4. examine the two US QSOs that appear in on the record sheet; what
DXCC entity is shown for each?

Thanks for the help on BOTH lists, Dave.

Sorry for the multiple posts here, my email program was telling me the message didn't go through.

I found out yesterday morning that DXCC cards would be checked today in Albuquerque, at the Duke City Hamfest, so I hastily assembled a submission and drove up there. Found a few problems, like my QSL card for 3A2LJ was overstamped with a G3???/MM, rendering the card useless for DXCC, although it's still a nice memento of days gone by. Truthfully, it might have been a MM that I contacted, it was 20+ years ago and I simply don't remember. There was also a card for YU7GW, but the card wasn't from YU7GW, it was from an SWL in Lithuania telling that he had heard us, and I had counted the card for Lithuania. Got that fixed, and now I am down to 98 confirmed, but cards should be on the way from N8S, KH0N, WH0C, and SZ6P, so I should have enough shortly.

For some reason, the card record sheet listed Hawaii twice, and continental United States on 6 meters twice, once for SSB and once for CW. Is there something I may have set wrong to make this happen? Tnx es 7 3
Earl

P.S. -- although I didn't get my DXCC today, I DID take second place in the QLF competition, and won an MFJ coffee cup for it. The had this HUGE straight key, made of plywood & various other stuff, connected to an old CPO. Of course, during the warm up, I had to send "VVV VVV DE KSM KSM KSM", but nobody seemed to realize it! <G>

Pathfinder DL search

Dave AA6YQ

(re-posting)

Some time ago, the maintainers of the online German callbook changed
their site to ensure that it cannot be accessed in any way other than
by typing a callsign into its Rufzeichen textbox and clicking
its "Suche starten" button. When you attempt to query this site using
either Pathfinder or Pathfinder Online, the result is a page full of
error reports. Juergen DL8LE has been working to get this changed,
but suggested in the meantime that it would be more useful if
Pathfinder's country-specify callbook search would simply display the
German Callbook site when the target callsign is German. You must
then manually type a callsign into its Rufzeichen textbox and click
its "Suche starten" button, but at least you'll see the lookup
results.

I have implemented Juergen's suggestion in Pathfinder Online, and the
next time you run Pathfinder you'll be prompted to download an
updated DL search that operates in this way. If you forget what to
do, let the mouse cursor hover over the DL search button for a few
seconds, and a popup with explanatory contents will appear.

Thanks to Juergen for his efforts on our behalf...
