DXKeeper 16.6.6 is available

Dave AA6YQ

Before installing or upgrading to DXKeeper 16.6.6,

if you are using Window Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 or Windows 11, update it to its latest malware definition in

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions

This version

- Correctly parses optional parameters associated with the External Log directive (tnx to Tim K1BR and Joe W4TV)

- provides a Report button on the Main window's "My QTHs" tab that generates a myQTH report that shows the number and percentage of
total QSOs made from each myQTH (requester lost in the mists of time)

- updates the MultipleQTHs.htm documentation file

Notes:

1. Update your firewall and anti-malware applications to consider this new version of DXKeeper to be "safe"

a. JOTTI virus scan: 0 of 15 scanners detected malware in this version's executable

b. VirusTotal: 0 of 67 scanners detected malware in this version's executable

c. submitted to Microsoft for analysis by Windows Defender: no malware detected in this version's executable

2. If this upgrade doesn't work correctly, see the "After an Upgrade" section of

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/ApplicationStoppedWorking

3. After upgrading, to revert to the previous version of SpotCollector, see

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/RevertApplicationVersion

DXKeeper 16.6.6 is available via the DXLab Launcher and via

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/download.htm

Re: Error in sound input

Steven

Today, home from the doctor, the error was waiting for me.  I makes no difference to have the radio on nor off, as it was today, during an FT8 contact, just monitoring, or about anytime it feels!  No RFI assumed.  I had the System>Sound>Volume Mixer on screen and the input and output was changed.   Worse yet, neither 4 or 5 USB Audio CODEX in/out could be found on the list!  I rebooted and back to 'normal'.

Just need to figure out how to keep the working CODEX in Win 11 and not let 11 change the in/out on me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FM on 50.313!!!

Earl Needham

Just realized I needed the latest BandModes.txt to get the proper modes. I had been wondering why all these guys were working FM where FT8 usually was.  Oh well.

I downloaded the latest file and all is well.

The joke's on me!

Since I could access the data using the URL either directly from a browser and also by clicking the link to go there in the PropView configuration (prediction), without any error - and - since the data source could be accessed in identical ways after the problem disappeared and appeared to look the same as before, I might conclude that it was not a hardware/software or internet service provider issue (especially since there were no other internet access issues). This would lead me to think it could have been a data source issue except that nobody else reported the problem on this site recently as far as I can tell. So I guess it shall remain just one of those mysteries.
+ The problem could have been transient, or quickly corrected.

I would like to force the date in a range of QSO from
the existing blank value to a new value (date).

I've selected the range of QSOs to be edited,
selected the item name to be modified and
can't enter a new date in 'New Item Value'.

'New Item Value' turns red on entry of the
eigth character.

Re: DXKeeper take 5 minutes to start?

Hi
Finally, and thanks for the list of "application interference", the NVIDIA software seems to be the cause of Launcher delay.
So by removing the NVIDIA Experience software, Launcher start "normally", and no more "wait' between these 2 lines from the log file
2022-06-30 05:47:24     > DXLab Apps        :
2022-06-30 05:47:24     > Monitors          : 3

However, it has no impact on long restart of DXL software (such as WW), ie closing WW, wait 10s, and try to restart it... it could takes up to 5mn also... but this is a different topic, and I have not analysed the log. Another day.

Note : Nvidia Experience software was not running in my configuration. The software was installed, but I have already tried several months ago to disable all services and no activity on the tack manager was visible, assuming nothing is running.
Uninstalling the software is efficient, not only disabling the services and from startup in task manager. That makes the difference.

Thanks

Update: I rebooted Windows 10/64 into 'Safe Mode with Networking' and the problem still persisted. Upon restarting the PC normally, the problem no longer existed although the root cause remains unknown.
+ That eliminates "interference from another application running on your compute" as the root cause.

Without computer access when operating portable on Field Day, I recorded my QSOs on paper, and now I'm going to enter them in DXKeeper with the "Optimize for real-time QSO entry" option NOT checked.

Is there a way to have it automatically fill in default values on the Log QSOs tab in the Contest Items group for Contest_ID and STX_String?
+ There is not.

I tried entering those values on the Contest Configuration tab, but that only seems to work when in Contest mode, which I don't want since that also puts you into real-time entry mode.

If it can't be done, a work-around would be to skip manually entering these items and later do a mass-update using the "Advanced Sorts, Filters, and Modifiers" panel.
+ Correct.

All DXLab apps and Windows Defender are updated. Today starting ProView produced the following error:

"unable to download sunspot number from https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/solar-cycle/predicted-solar-cycle.json - resource not found"

Navigating to the above URL (also the same in PropView configuration) appears to show some data.
PropView launches OK after acknowledging the error. Is this a problem at the data source (i.e. NOAA)?
+ This could be the result of a problem at the data source, a problem with your internet service provider, a hardware or software problem with internet access from your computer, or interference from another application running on your computer.

I think Dave has said I the past that Defender is all you need.
+ I have never said that! I do not have the testing facilities required to make such a claim.

All DXLabs applications are submitted to Microsoft so if Defender is up to date you will be assured it is not the cause of trouble.
+ The rate of trouble reports by users of Windows Defender has decreased substantially since I began sending DXLab applications to Microsoft Security Essentials.

How do you have your system protected (recommend any particular SW?) so there is not
a fight between logger access to LOTW and anti-malware SW.

+ I do not make recommendations for anti-malware; however, I can recite some facts:

1. I use the free version of AVG; periodically, I install Malwarebytes, conduct a scan, and then uninstall Malwarebytes.

2. Before being publicly released, a new version of a DXLab applications is sent to Microsoft Security Essentials; it is not released unless it receives a clean bill of health. If you're using Windows Defender, you must download the latest "definitions", as described at the beginning of every DXLab release note.

3. Anti-malware reported to be problematic is listed here:

https://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/ApplicationInteference

The "hangs" are so infrequent I do not want to mess around and screw-up something by
turning-off any anti-malware SW.
If anti-malware or other applications are interfering with your DXLab applications, then your system does not meet the requirements for hosting DXLab.

I concur with using multiple monitors rather than one "giant" monitor.  Why?  Doing so provides both flexibility and redundancy.  If one monitor fails during a contest or chasing a rare DX station, I can give up the 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 of the screen space and either delete that window or move it.  If the one giant monitor/TV dies, I would be temporarily disabled until I find/install a replacement.  There are other reasons why biggest is not always best even though it is impressive.

BTW, my primary monitor is directly in front of the keyboard where I can raise or lower each for best long-term comfort.  All my monitors are on arms with which I can place them as needed.  Some also hide gear which rarely requires my attention.  But, I can move the appropriate monitor to access something like a power supply.  This is more efficient use of space.

Those who have primary monitors (ones accessed frequently and/or used for typing (I rarely look at the keyboard) configured above their gear don't seriously consider ergonomics.  Try operating with that configuration for 24 hours!
