Re: RDXKeeper and Spot Collector running slow

dave@kw1dx.com

So back home now and able to run the PC in Safe Mode.  I did so and when I ran SpotCollector and DXKeeper windows security needed me to add permissions to the two programs which I did.  (I thought I had done that, but I guess I was in the wrong area).  It worked ok in Safe Mode and after rebooting not in Safe Mode it seems to be working good now.

Thanks for the help.

DXKeeper and Spot Collector are running very slowly compared to two weeks ago. Slow opening, closing and when in use, even updating configuration settings are slow

I have done the following

  • DXLab is up to date (DXKeeper 16.4.0, Spotcollector 9.0.8)
  • Made sure Windows is up to date. (Rest of PC seems to be running fine)
  • Using Biddefender security and have an exception for DXKeeper and SpotCollector
  • Rebooted PC
  • Pruned spot log to 2 days
  • Compacted the spot log

Changes in the past couple of weeks

  • Installed updates for SpotCollector (Seems like the problem started after installing Version 9.0.7
  • New Flex 6400. I recall that it was working ok after I had set up the 6400 and was using it for a time before the problem started.

Any suggestions on what to try to correct this would be greatly appreciated?

+ As a diagnostic step, please reboot Windows into "Safe Mode with Networking", and then start SpotCollector. How does its performance compare to what you experience with Windows booted normally?

Something I always wanted too but never asked for and I fully understand that at this point with the large number of functions added over the years it is not a reasonable effort. Along with that I might as well ask even more. Make every window and sub window resizable too. 😊

Easiest answer these days is a larger monitor. There are many reasonably cheap ones these days. Often a full TV is much cheaper than a monitor only device.

I wish I could make all characters use larger Font Sizes.  I increased Font Size to 12.  And I increased the Appearance from 125% to 150%.

Part of my problem is, I am using a 15.3" laptop and 18.3" external monitor (diagonal measurements).  I use the external monitor to operate DXLab Suite and some other apps of my station, remotely.  PSTRotator is OK and RF-Kit's windows can be dragged to any size but DXLab Windows are basically Fixed in size.
I am using RealVNC on the 18" monitor (1920-1080 res.) to view my PC in my shack (2560x1440 graphic card resolution).  I lose some resolution in RealVNC which I can drag to any size, but even full screen leaves the DXLab window fonts very small.  Again DXLab on the laptop screen is not too bad.
Maybe you have other suggestions, I hope?

My next laptop and external monitor will have 2550 x 1440 resolution and that might help.  I am considering a larger laptop and a larger external monitor as per Dave's comments.

Dave, please make it possible to increase all font sizes of DXLab Suite.

+ That would require a multi-month development effort that would stop all forward progress in functionality while it's underway. Given the option for users to obtain larger font sizes by appropriately configuring Windows, extending each DXLab application to support user-modifiable font sizes in each of their windows will remain a low priority.

To review: CW Skimmer showed my VFO frequency and interacted with the transceiver literally for years, but the frequency has not appeared in Skimmer in the past few months.

My setup: TS-990 with a Navigator, an up-to-date DXLab suite including Commander 15.3.0, the secondary CAT serial port, CW Skimmer 2.1 with an up-to-date Omni-Rig, and W3OA’s Skimmer-to-Commander 1.9 (SkimCmdr), which shows it is connected to Skimmer and linked to Commander. Com0com used to create a pair of virtual serial ports.

The solution: After trying many different approaches, this worked – deleting com0com from the computer, reinstalling a fresh copy from com0com.sourceforge.net, and creating a new, other pair of virtual serial ports.

+ That's a new kind of failure. Thanks for the report, Steve!

PS I change the PC in Shack res. to 1920x1080 to match my external monitor and it seem better.

Yes, I was able to log into LoTW yesterday both before and after trying to upload 2 new QSOs to LotW and failing. I even terminated all DX Lab apps (except Launcher) and started it over again last night, but reaching LotW from the DX Keeper's QSL tab was not getting any response from LotW last night on any LotW function buttons-- except "Check LoTW Queue" which still seemed to work. Everything else was working fine.

The only thing I did not do last night was close out the DX Lab Launcher. So I did that, went to bed, and low and behold when I opened it all up again this morning, everything is working fine now. So I had to close Launcher apparently after the updates this time for the first time.

+ Closing the Launcher has nothing to do with DXKeeper's ability to interact with LoTW.

I have been able to change font size in DXKeeper.  Click "Config" then select the "Log" tab.  Under "Log Page Display" select the "Fonts" button.

Not sure what happened, but after I did the DB patches last night before bedtime, I can no longer upload to LoTW today nor do sync. While Club Log and eQSL uploads still working fine.

+ The updated participation databases released yesterday cannot possibly prevent DXKeeper from submitting QSOs to LoTW.

Getting Pop up:
----------------------------------------------

No QSOs were uploaded to LotW

internet connection is down, or LotW is unreachable

+ This error message means exactly what it says. As a diagnostic step, did you attempt to log in to your LoTW account from your web browser?

Re: China QSO Plot Issue

If all the spots were from NA and they were sending grid EM73, that suggests that they may have been remotely operating a station actually located in the US. Of course, that would not count as China for DXCC. Furthermore, if this was indeed the case, using a Chinese callsign to identify the station would be a violation of FCC rules, which require all stations transmitting from a location in the US or its dependencies to use a callsign authorized under FCC rules (part 97.119, and if the operator is licensed outside the US, part 97.107 applies as well).
