Getting a bit off topic but - True, which is why I specified "usually".
Many CPUs are sitting idle while we do other stuff, like work DX. Many
people have a fast enough processor, with DXLab doesn't take much. There
are exceptions all over the place like BOINC which will max out every
processor available 100% of the time.

For most people most of the time, memory upgrade would be step 1. A new
CPU often isn't an upgrade, its a PC replacement.

Your assertion 'if it fits in memory its OK' flies in the face of advice
from little known entities like Microsoft who suggest enough to keep 50%
of it free. Full memory is like full disk: PC grinds to a halt.

Notepad is an application developed by Microsoft; DXLab applications invoke it to display text files, like progress reports.
If your Notepad is broken, you should contact Microsoft Support.

The enhancement request at the core of this thread is to
support the direct entry of information into the Log Page Display

And that was my misunderstanding ... I read it as support for entry
from the main Window which is supported via the QSO panel.

Correct. There is no CTRL-J shortcut when the cursor is in the
Filter Panel textbox. See

<http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxkeeper/Help/KeyboardShortcuts.htm>
With the "Log QSOs tab's Default Focus" option, it may be worthwhile
to support Cltr-J in the filter textbox.

***What problems have you encountered when logging via the Main window's "Log QSOs" tab?

Here’s what I encounter.

1. I see a needed station in Spot Collector. I double click its row.

2. The station's call, freq, band, etc. are loaded into DXKeeper's QSO panel, but the code field is flashing red. A dialog box has popped up that says 'You must correct the flashing red fields in the current QSO before performing this operation".

3. I dismiss the dialog box, and then the code field is properly filled in with the ARRL DXCC entity number.

4. I click the log button to log the QSO. (A dialog box with a progress bar is pops up for a second or two. It says "Recomputing award progress for [PFX of station]”. Can this happen in the background without showing the dialog?) The just-logged QSO row in the LPD is red, presumably because it's info is still in the DXK QSO panel. But no: if I click the 'New' button the QSO panel is cleared and I get a new row in the LPD, but the QSO I just logged is still red. It stays red until I start over at step 1.

I've never considered this because in the 12 years since DXKeeper was

would be quite difficult to provide the same level of automation that is
currently provided by the Capture window and the Main window's "Log QSOs"

its style
of operation. I suggest that you give DXKeeper a couple of months to work
its way into your subconscious mind.
Exactly what I'm planning to do. Not knowing how your software is
structured I can't judge or suggest - but will take your word for it
about its difficulty. Besides, it's not all that alien to me - N1MM
Logger, which I use for contests, similarly has a separate entry
window. Probably will not be difficult to get used to.

+++ I hate to pile on, but I will be the second to request the ability to directly enter log data into the Log Page Display.

*** Expressing your support for an enhancement request is not "piling on".

Switching to DXLab from DXbase involves getting used to many differences, but this one is the most difficult for me. Why have an additional dialog box get in the way of logging QSOs? At first I thought that I didn't need the Capture dialog and could enter QSOs into the QSO panel of the Log QSOs tab. But I found that using DXKeeper that way has some problems when working and logging stations from Spot Collector.

That may help but I'd need to try it <G>. LotW's submissions are
actually based on "APP_DXKeeper_LotW_QSLRDATE" ascending not QSO_DATE

I can modify the submission generator search by
"APP_DXKeeper_LotW_QSLRDATE ascending" when assembling an LotW-only
submission.

For the user to change the LotW suggested submission means
1) go to the "Your QSOs" tab/menu on the LotW web site
2) select the desired Award account at the bottom of the
"QSOs to list" form
3) Enter the call of the desired confirmation
4) (optionally) select the desired band
5) check "Show confirmed QSOs only"
6) click "Submit"

When the search results are return
1) check the desired alternate QSO
2) click "submit <award name> credit changes"

Yes, LotW's combination of badly suboptimal submissions, an awkward user
interface for modifying submissions, and no programmatic interface to accept
a submission makes things tedious.

In this regard the help for keyboard shortcuts is misleading ... Ctrl-J says
"(equivalent to clicking the *New* button)" but it does not create a new QSO
record if the QSO panel is displaying an "old" QSO.

If you place the mouse cursor in the QSO panel's call textbox and strike
CTRL-J, DXKeeper doesn't create an empty new QSO?

Perhaps enabling the "new" function for Ctrl-J or creating a new Ctrl-N
shortcut to create a new entry would reinforce that it is possible to enter
log data directly on the Log Page Display.

It is not currently possible to enter log data directly into the Log Page
Display. Enabling this would require implementing the following automation:

1. when a callsign has been entered, perform database and callbook lookups,
and populate the QSO's items with the results of those lookups

2. update the QSO's frequency, receive frequency, and mode as Commander
reports changes from the transceiver (if "optimize for realtime QSO entry"
is enabled, otherwise initialize these fields to their values from the last
QSO logged with "optimize for realtime QSO entry" disabled)

3. compute the band and receive band from the frequency and receive
frequency respectively

4. appropriately set QSO begin and end times as a function of the "optimize
for realtime QSO entry" setting

5. appropriately initialize signal reports

6. check each item for errors, and flag those that are invalid

7. prevent a QSO missing valid critical items (call, DXCC entity, band,
mode, date, time) from being logged

8. implement keyboard shortcuts for rapid navigation among items

The above automation is already provided for logging QSOs via the Main
window's "Log QSOs" panel, logging QSOs via the Capture window, and logging
QSOs via WinWarbler's "QSO Info" panel.

The user who prefers spreadsheet-style entry can do so now by setting up a
spreadsheet as described in

<http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxkeeper/Help/Import.htm#Importing tab-delimited
files>

DXKeeper can directly import QSOs from a properly configured spreadsheet.

I will also point out that when sized to display its Call, DXCC, RST sent,
RST Rcvd, name, QTH, tx freq, rx freq, primary subdivision (e.g. State), and
secondary subdivision (e.g. County) items, DXKeeper's Capture window
consumes only 400 pixels by 200 pixels of screen space - 6% of a 1280 x 1024
display, or 3% of a 1920 x 1200 display.

The tradeoff is purely opportunity cost. Time spent on a fourth
implementation of the above automation is time not spent on this
functionality:

The phrase GIGO, if changed to GOGI would be appropriate for this issue.

73 de Sebastian, W4AS

I've noticed some odd behavior with address displays. I'm an XML subscriber
with QRZ.com; and QRZ is properly displaying the names and addresses, etc.
on their web site.

With DXKeeper configured to use QRZ XML as its callbook, I logged QSOs
with each of the callsigns you mention above, added each of these QSOs to
the QSL Queue, and then inspected each QSL Queue entry's address using the
QSL Editor. Every entry's address is complete and properly formatted.

How many QSOs with F5PAU are present in your log? Please examine the
address logged with each such QSO.

Just a heads-up that these workaround instructions are no longer valid. When trying a reinstall I now receive a message that says: "Your Operating System No Longer Supports IE8, Please install IE9 or later."

I hope a patch to fix this becomes available soon.

That patch will have to come from Microsoft, as it is their component that is malfunctioning. They have acknowledged this.

I was a devout DXLab user, but have had to abandon it as it no longer supports the lastest hardware/software combos.

DXLab supports the latest hardware/software combinations. It does, however, require that Windows work properly.

I've found HRD to be useless for contest logging and awards tracking, and wish I could go back to DXLab.

Is there any way to do a manual download to update DXLab's LoTW records?

Yes. On the LotW tab of DXKeeper's "QSL Configuration" window, check the "PC has no internet connection" box. When you click the "Sync LotW QSOs" or "Sync LotW QSLs" buttons, you'll be instructed how to proceed.

If your computer is running Windows 7 with IE 9 and unable to download from LOTW, and if it did work with IE8, you can fix the problem with a clean install of Windows 7. The clean install is a fresh full version of Windows 7 rather than an upgrade from Vista or a partial re-install.

Been there, did it, verified it. Now running the full install of Windows 7 sent by Microsoft to verify their upgrade version was flawed with IE9.
