Gene Miller - Obituary

Glenn Tuttle

It is with deep regret to publish this obituary on former sailboat cruiser, full-time liveaboard, and long-time friend:

In Memory of
OCTOBER 29, 1943 - OCTOBER 30, 2019

Gene Robert Miller passed quietly in his sleep at home October 30, 2019 after battling a long illness from cancer. He had turned 76 the day before. Gene was born in Warren, OH in October of 1943 to Martha (Law) and Herschel Levi Miller. He attended Cortland (OH) High School and joined the US Air Force after graduation. He spent four years as a Weapons Technician but took flying lessons that started him down the road to his career as a commercial pilot.

Gene is survived by his wife, Martha (Mendel) Miller, of 42 years. They met at the Youngstown, OH airport while he was flying for an air taxi company and Martha (Marti) was training to be an Air Traffic Controller. Gene's children, Brett (Nancy Lynch), Terilyn (Logan) Peters, and Kelly (Mike) Criddle and three grandchildren, Kati - Brianna - Charlotte will forever miss his fun personality and quirky sense of humor.

Gene and Marti had many fun experiences throughout his life including working and living in Puerto Rico where he flew trips to the U. S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Island chain. They moved to FL and lived on a sailboat for over 10 years. When it was time for Gene to retire, they bought a motorhome and travelled around the United States several times. There were few dull moments with Gene "at the helm" . They compiled many wonderful memories to keep them going during the aging process. Not long ago, someone asked Gene if there was anything left on his "bucket list", and he said, "No, I've done everything I ever dreamt about". Not many people can say that.

Gene became a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks in 2002. He was very active at the New Smyrna Beach (FL) Elks Lodge. He was elected to the Board of Trustees and was a cook for the weekly Spaghetti Dinner. In 2011, Gene became a member of the New Smyrna Beach (FL) Masonic Lodge to honor his father's memory as a Mason. Gene was awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in 2015 after having successfully completed 50 years at a pilot. His most rewarding hobby was building wooden ship models from scratch and there are many examples of his work in their home. Gene also enjoyed working on-line jigsaw puzzles.

In lieu of flowers, Marti would appreciate donations be made to the Texas Humane Heroes, a no-kill pet shelter. Their web-site is On their main page, you can click on Donate and get to the donation page where you can designate an amount and a name "In Memory Of".

There will be a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the Cedar Park Senior Center, 408 Ridgewood Dr, from 2-4 pm. The Center is located just off Buttercup Creek Rd about halfway between Lakeline and Bell Blvd. All are welcome. If you knew Gene, please bring your favorite memory of him.
