attached is a picture of the alternator set up. Don't know what it came off of. It is a delco 10si as far as I can tell. It appears that there was originally a sheet metal cover over where the 7/16 bolt screws in. Someone drilled a large hole through the cover.

I was curious about the Farmall starter drive. I ordered one to see if it will work for my 48 station wagon. I needed to replace the Bendix anyway. I'll let you know in about a week.

6 volt conversions of GM SI alternators are available. They even hava a pulley that is right for Crosley fan belts. Suppliers of parts for Model A Fords sell those alternators. Also, believe Amazon sells them. Your use of rubber hose to overcome the offset between the alternator & the water pump is genius. The only challenge is center drilling the armature of the alternator to accept a 1/4"-7/16 head bolt. Thank you for sharing.

After posting last time inquiring about a carburetor rebuild kit for our '39 coupe convertible, we have run into other problems.  I had a friend who does a lot of work on carbs for jet-skis take a look at it and had some problems.  He got is partially apart and cleaned it really well.  Had lots of soot and other buildup from gas decades ago.  He said he could only separate the carb about an inch and something was catching internally and was afraid if he tried to hard to separate it, something would break and be un-repairable.  We also have a very old book with about 6 pages all about Crosley maintenance.  We were attempting to adjust the set adjustment screws as the manual states but they are seized up as well.  In his past experiences, breaking those loose also causes future fuel leaks.  Long story short, the engine runs fine anything above idle, if we let the RPMs drop to idle speed, it dies.  Thought that a good cleaning would help clear this problem up and run better but it didn't.  He believe there is something else in the carb not working properly. 

So with his recommendation, I am here looking for another carb in good working order, or another carb to use for parts to fix this one if we break something when trying to fully separate the carb.  Attached is a picture of the carb currently on the car.

If anyone can help please respond to this post with contact information and myself or my dad will get in touch.  My grandpa (who is now gone) bought the car new and we really wanted to get it drive-able before he past but ran out of time.  So we would really like to get it up and going before we loose to much more time so my dad, his siblings, and rest of our family can enjoy this fun little car.

I am wanting to regularly drive up mountains and on the road in general.  A comment made to me by my restoration guy:. "You might want to look into a larger fan to protect the aluminum cover from overheating".   Anyone have comments on this thought?

My solution to the water pump drive problem works. I'm just not sure that the bolt coming out of the alternator is really strong enough.  I'm just trying to make what I bought work. I've only had my Crosley for a few months in time I'll figure out a better method. Never had a Crosley before but I love these little cars.

I agree that more fan should not be necessary if everything else is good.  But if you do, try the four blade Farm-O-Road fan.  It fits the same as the regular fan.  Just be careful that you don't get a generator four blade fan.  It is designed to blow air out of the radiator instead of pulling it in from the grill.

Air dams are important too. Some are under the bumper such as VC. On both sides of the radiator in CC and also in the hood on CD.  If  things are right mine has never over heated in WV mountains.

Andy, from the picture it appears that the water pump shaft is not quite in line with the alternator bolt.  I couldn't tell exactly which direction due to the angle of the picture.  While the flex hose coupling allows it to work, you will put side loading on the water pump bearings and seal.  If you run the car a lot, it can cause leaks and eventual water pump failure.  A spacer of the right thickness between the water pump and the crankcase with appropriate longer bolts would solve right to left alignment.  I am not quite sure how to solve any up and down alignment.

You make a good point. I looked it over and while it doesn't look like shiming the water pump would work because of how previous owners mounted it, it looks like I can shim the alternator mounting bracket to get good shaft alignment. Thank you for your observation. 

Trailer tie down locations

Big week here -- getting my (formerly my Dad's) '51 Super Sports back from Ted Dellacamera next week after many years in Dad's and then my garage.   Planning to celebrate with a new 7x14 enclosed trailer.   The dealer will install 4 D rings in the trailer for tie downs -- are there any guidance on where to put them?  I assume they would typically be near the front and rear and a bit inboard from the edges.

You are correct on the location. While Ted has the car, have him install the frame mount tie down parts for you. He has them for sale, and you will be glad you have them.
