12v conversion with alternator

Andy Farley

I brought a 1948 Crosley wagon that had been converted to 12v With an alternator. They installed a bolt on the back of the alternator to drive the water pump. This is not a great arrangement. Is there a wat to drive a water pump directly with the fan belt?

Re: 12v conversion with alternator

Doug Daniel

Summit Racing sells 12 volt automotive water pumps (the flow rates may be too high?).  Also,  1981 to 1986 Chevettes with Diesel engines drove a vacuum pump off the rear of the alternator.  You may find that drive more refined.   Driving a vacuum pump off the rear of the alternator on a Diesel engine car was common and I am sure there are other cars whose alternators would be worth looking at.

I looked at Summit Racing, there are some definite possibilities there at a reasonable price. The next question is.... how many gallons per minute does a Crosley water pump produce?

I would be grateful for guidance.

Thanks

Looking for help getting `48 wagon running for Nationals. Located in Toledo Ohio area

Todd Swangstu

Hi Guys, I picked up my first Crosley last summer after nationals.  It is a `48 wagon, ran 10 years ago but was parked in a garage and has been sitting.  I am sure it is going to need gas tank restored, carb, fuel lines, tires the usual gone thru. Not sure I am going to have the time to do it and have it running before Nationals which was my goal.

Does anybody know of a member or collector in the Toledo/Wauseon area that does work on the side and could maybe help me out?

Thanks

BTW just read my own post...I am willing to pay for the work to be done.  Kinda sounded like I wanted some free help the way it was worded.  LOL...no I am looking for someone with a shop or does this on the side but knowledgeable with Crosleys.

Hot Shot pops out of gear

Mike P

Hi,

My modified Hot Shot won't stay in gear, if I hit a bump or get off and on the gas it comes out of gear.

The previous owner put in a remote shifter, not sure if it's this shifter or the transmission itself that is the problem.
The shifter does not seem to have any loads on it that would cause it to pull it out of gear.

Any experiences or solutions with these trannies popping out of gear?

Here are some solution from awhile back. First things to check are the spring loaded poppets in the top of the transmission

Yes its usually the shifter top but could also be the trans itself.  Your going to have to remove the top and inspect.  We can help.

Butch

Good info EXCEPT for: "Also cork plug at left rear of cover that held additional spring and detent ball [for 2-3 rail] probably fell out. Tap hole for 3/8ths-24. Blow out chips. Use set screw with lock nut to hold in spring and detent ball, both should be as close to 11/32nds dia. as possible with spring around 3/8ths long and pretty stout. Screw in set screw or bolt till snug then back off till 2-3 rail can move and lock with nut. Had 48 that needed this fix. Seb."

The original Crosley shifter, never had a ball and spring, under the "cork plug". That was there just to keep dirt out.

The only detents were the 1 spring and 2 poppets, located between the two shift rails.

I had an old Honda Motorcycle that would do that.. Found the shift forks were worn allowing the gears to move around..
Not sure if a Crosley trans would react the same or not?

Prewar Crosley wheel

James Dlapa

Hi all, just finished sand blasting the wheels for my prewar, and found one that has significant pitting on the inside and around the valve stem.
Might some one out there have a pre-war wheel they would be willing to sell?  These are about a half inch narrower than their postwar counterparts.
Thank you in advance for your help...

Thanks for the replies, I will take a look at those areas, especially the spring loaded poppets, and let you know what I find.

Clutch installation

Steve Perry

Hello Everyone..
This should be an easy one. I’m getting ready to install the clutch and don’t see any markings to know which side faces the flywheel?
Thanks

Re: Clutch installation

Springs toward the transmission. It's actually hard to install it the wrong way.
