Hi Dave,
Are you saying you want me to write about my addiction to Crosley?

No Steve... I know about that.. What I thought might help with your hunt would be the history you have with this particular car. Where it came from, who you bought it from, color features, etc.

Re: Still Looking For Any History on My 1951 Supersports
Steve Olinger
Great,
I purchased in Oct 2018 near Richmond Va from Robert Lewis. Before that it was near Raleigh North Carolina where a gentleman had listed it on Ebay a couple times (Thanks Fred Syrdal for the photos he saved from Ebay and was also featured on the Barnfinds column May 2018) for his father in law. After speaking to him his father in law purchased it one morning at 5 am from a man in Vermont and no past history. The only history back of that is that it was last titled in 1962 in Indiana by Robert Christian from Clayton Indiana. It is very original car (which I Love) and Very surprised to see the HC stamped engine and the spot on the firewall for the Vitane tank! I then knew I had a factory Vitameter car. Thanks for any help! I know I'm crazy for history.

So I guess for Jim...how do I find a complete email contact address for message posters particularly when they aren't members?

Re: For Sale: Many Parts, See List in Message - AZ
I guess ask me for it if I forget to post a coded version of their eMail (which I do a lot) or there isn't a phone number. In this case I'm not sure it is worth contacting someone from a 5+ year old ad but here is his email from when it was posted <mhendershot "at" cox.net>

Temp sensor help needed
Richard Helm
I'm looking for a little help and advice on the engine temp sensor. I accidently bumped the capillary tube while replacing the battery on my Hot Shot and now the gauge doesn't work. The end that goes into the block appears to be undamaged but there must be a bad spot on the tube. If I could locate the damage on the tube is there any hope in straightening it enough to make the gauge work again? If not, I have a couple other questions to clarify things:

Service Motors has the ability to fix them. Just send the gauge to us and we will take care of it. Or give us a call 866-449-0029.

The block thread is 5/8" X 18 (as I recall) fine thread.
The chances of the tube being just kinked and not working, are slim. If it's not working, most likely punctured and leaked the fluid out. Butch On 4/1/2019 6:33 PM, Richard Helm

Re: Temp sensor help needed

One can repair these By purchase a replacement gage, Freeze the “blub” (the
part that screws in block) so the fluid will not leak out. Cut the old “bulb”
off leaving enough tube to solder new bulb cut the new froze bulb. With a peace
of 1/8 inch ID. tube spice the new bulb to the original tube then
solder.
Note: You may want to make the spice so it will be under the dash out of
site.
Install new blub and
gage in freezer Do not cut until you are ready to spice the two together.
Dry Ice is best if
one can fine it.
Good luck.

Repairing temp. gauges has been one of several "You can't get there from here." Crosley mysteries. Your description makes the fix easy. Don

Remember, simple is NOT the same as easy. The "fluid", in the bulb, that your are working with/against, is ether. Highly volatile and flammable. Dry ice is the key component, freezing the bulb, of the new gauge, while prepping everything is a big key to the success of the project, as is making the splice a good distance away from the back of the original gauge back. It's quite easy to un-solder some of the gauge components. If you have more questions, before attempting this, e-mail me and I'll try to answer them. I've done this several times. Butch

I don’t chime on on this stuff often; however, I would send it out and have someone who does this all the time repair it. I have had a few rebuilt over the years and it was well worth it. You will be better off getting someone like a Service Motors to do it. Just my 2 cents and lessons learned having been involved with Crosleys and other antique cars for many years. Good luck. Jeff

Info Wanted on 3/4 Midget
Phil Mendola sent me a picture and some history on a 3/4 Crosley powered Midget and was wondering if it still existed. He figured the current owner may not have the history.
Here is what Phil sent me. "I just started corresponding with an old friend of mine from my hot rod days, back in the '50's & '60's. He sent me a close up picture of a Crosley powered 3/4 midget race car. This car was raced at the Rochester War Memorial back in the late sixties. I myself remember going to watch those races back then. The drivers name was Junior Stevens who was from Washburn, Iowa. Junior stayed at my friends house when he was here. He carried the race car in the bed of his pick up. He had a fresh Crosley motor in it, and ran the car in the empty parking lot at Charlotte Beach, to break it in a little bit more, before the race. The car was also raced at Utica NY. Later he ran the car at a small track near the speedway in Daytona, and won that race. Junior passed away several years ago. My friend doesn't know what happened to the car. It is possible that one of our members may have it now. I am sure if we can find out who, they would be interested in the early history of the car. Writing on the side of the car indicates Salem Speedway, in Salem Indiana. But, since Junior lived in Iowa, it may be that Paul Gorrell ended up with it or knows of it. ???" Any idea anyone?
