I seem to remember John telling me he had upgraded to a Big Block. I know several people that have molded the Crosley Script to attach to the Big Block to make their conversion a bit more stock looking, that is my plan if I ever get my BB installed.

Charlie Nicholas Story

I got this eMail with others familiar with the Flying Saucer and Charlie Nicholas

Today I received my weekly notice from Hyman Ltd. and saw the 1951 Crosley LeMans Team Racecar for sale.  I immediately thought of Charlie Nicholas and his “Flying Saucer”.  I then did bit of ‘googling’ and found your website.  I graduated from Fairmont High School in 1954 and occasionally worked for Charlie in 52, 53 and 54.  I only knew his shop on East Blue Earth Avenue and his home on Tilden Street.  Yes, and met Ruby many times.

Charlie was short and stout, had a hard time bending over a fender to service a normal car engine except a VW or a Porsche, or an MG or an Austin Healey. He also had a bit of a problem sliding under cars as his shop had no lift, only a creeper, standard floor jacks and stands.  I guess that is where I came in at 5’10” and 155 lbs.  I could bend over and crawl under and Charlie would issue instructions and away we went.

I remember his love of Crosleys, a small, economical, well engined, little 4-place car.  I also recall his appreciation of European engineering and his own attention to detail.  At that time it was fix it rather than to replace and I learned a lot from Charlie.  Oh, I could go on and on but won’t bore you with more.  Thanks for remembering Charlie and taking me back on this little trip as well.  Cheers.

Thanks Jim, great bunch of pictures. I'd take that car for a toot in a heartbeat; all I would have to do is buy it!

For those that don't recognize the Crosley Auto Club's President online name, "Spock" is our fearless leader. So now you have heard from the two most informed people in the club on what is going on for the Nationals.

So now back to the shop to get those Crosleys ready for the Summer.

Just found out that the LeMans Crosley is on the market, being sold by Hyman. Good writeup and lots of pictures in the posting. One of the rarest Crosleys in existence with a great history.

Re: Front Bellhousing Replace

Butch

In the earlier style crankcase, with the rope type seal, yes, the crankshaft needs to be dropped first.
On the late style crankcase, with the neoprene seal, it does not.

  Hi Jim
Thank you for suggesting that I check the Crosley Gang files for Carter carb. information. Double thanks, also found a great description of how to remove a VC body.

I believe that is a Hot Shot hood.  If I remember correctly, the Super Sports hood clips were on the front and the lock to the rear.  They will actually work on either VC version though.

Identify Carter carburetor

PATRICIA GRITTI

Been trying to deal with my Carter equipped Crosley "Starts then cuts out after a few seconds"
Found a W-O rebuild service manual on the internet. The manual lists several uses for the W-O. None of the uses mentions the Crosley!
Is the W-O carb used by Crosley different from those used by Jeep, Willys, Americar, Kaiser in any way? ie, ventury size, jet size etc.
