Re: Restoration tips for beginners
There seems to be a tendency for new folks to get some rattle can primer to cover spots they are working on. A lot of the off the shelf stuff at WalMart , Home Depot and big box auto stores is lacquer primer. Lacquer will allow moisture to go thru. When I got the truck I'm now finishing it had primer all over it.Actually did not look all that bad but since I had no idea what was done under it I decided to strip it all off with a DA and wire wheel. Under the primer I found a complete coverage of red dust :ie surface rust.Your best bet is to always pick a brand and stick to it for all products. Primer, Surfacer, Etching color coat etc. Pick a brand and use only it. Talk to real experts about grades of sandpaper, fillers, blocking, cutting and polishing etc etc. I do all my own painting and frankly my spraying is suspect. So I learned (no I HAD to learn ) to use a buffer. I've seen so many color coats with trash, flies, dust etc that just a little time with a buffer would have made it so much better. The answer always is "I'm afraid of a buffer". Why ? Use waffle foam pads, run the buffer slower (yes it will take longer but so what), have a spray bottle of water handy to spritz the surface now and then as you buff.Stay off edges or pay attention to which way the buffer turns. If you screw it up, fix it, not a big deal.

Re: gasoline in crankcase
Bruce Derenski
I’d check the fuel pump. A hole in the diaphragm can dump raw fuel straight to the crankcase.

Re: gasoline in crankcase
Carefully check your carb. float bowl for any trash of any kind. It may be just a sticky needle. If the needle does stick it may mean your tank is dirty. intermittent sticking means you should clean the whole fuel system. good luck. Rich W.

gasoline in crankcase
Douglas Grout
Weather permitting, I've been using my prewar to drive into town ( 16 miles round trip...check oil before every trip ). Early this week, before taking it out, I checked and found the crankcase full of gasoline. I put the car on the lift, drained the crankcase, and left it raised for a couple of days thinking that if the float in the carburetor is hung up, fuel will continue to percolate down through the carb, into the crankcase and onto a sheet of white paper placed under the open drain hole. Two days and not one drip. Fuel level in the gas tank with the petcock open is unchanged.
For that much gasoline to have gotten into the sump, it would have to be a slow drip over the course of the previous week. This car has a Tillotson DY 1A carburetor calibrated to 7/8 turn idle and 1 5/8 turn main adjustment. Surely the answer is right in front of me, I just can't see it.

Re: 1951 Super Sport wheel cylinders
1" in front. 3/4" in rear. Look at the fronts. If they ste selfsesling, no need for copper washers. If they are a full open cavity like the originals, you will need washers. The ones I just installed were self sealing. I still had to use the washers on the rear. Good luck, gabe.

Steve
To Jeff, Dave, Janyne, Jim, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to put this together, CONGRATULATIONS. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to everyone who submitted a picture of their cars. The competition and quality could not have been better.
I am even more anxious to see everyone in 2021. My vehicles let me know they miss all their brothers, sisters, and cousins. Thanks to our officers for putting this together and thank you everyone for sharing.

Illinois Region Meet on Sunday, Sept. 13 - Tentative Approval
Midwest Crosley Owners, To get this approval, they requested and I provided information about an approximate number of people and our activities. So for right now, we are approved to proceed with our meet. I will continue to update as we get closer. Something new for this year is an option to participate in a Saturday evening cruise to the Oglesby Root Beer Stand. If you plan on traveling and getting a motel room for the night, there is a Days Inn and a Best Western nearby in Oglesby. Jim Welther has spoken with the manager of the root beer stand and he has also given his approval. If you plan on attending or thinking about it, let me know. I will be putting a newsletter shortly.

Just wanted to give a big thank- you To Jim , Jeff and Jane and anyone I missed that was involved in putting on the virtual national meet, for those of us that have never been able to attend in person it was a very nice option in a crazy year. I entered with no expectations other than showing others the car I restored to honor my father in-law, it came at a time when I had my hands full fighting cancer, had it not been for this project I am not sure where I would have been mentally, It surely helped keep me grounded. Today when I checked the results I was humbled that I had been chosen as a winner in the CD class.
Thanks Neal Derochie in Iowa
