Re: New rudder for Windsong

George Da Porge

Hi Ken - I don’t know for a fact, but I’m pretty sure HDPE heavier than water. Add in the SST shaft... I do coat it with bottom paint. Some of it has built up, but there are always a few bare spots after I power wash the scum off in the fall. The BP hasn’t come off the rudder by itself. One feature I think is well thought out (at least on the RudderCraft) is that it has weep holes along the SST shaft (to get air to the SST). They are really slits, 3 on each side. They’re not readily visible but when I pull the boat out in the fall, water does drain out of them for a day or two.

Take a look at Catalina outfitters. Their elliptical rudder is on my boat list.

George,  Does a HDPE rudder have positive flotation and can it, or should it be
Bottom painted.

Thanks Ken

5 years ago I bought an HDPE rudder direct from RudderCraft. Love it. Guaranteed for life, I believe. Will never fail like a foam rudder.

Ken,

After several years of fussing, I bought a HDPE (high density polyethylene) rudder. It's solid so there's no foam in it to cause problems. No maintenance at alI. Don't recall which of the vendors I used, but you can always go to Catalina Direct.

I replaced my rudder 4 years ago after trying all the things you've done Ken. Call Bob "Al" Walker at Foss Foam in Williston Florida, great guy to work with.  Ph. 352.529.1104.  Www.newrudders.com

New rudder for Windsong

Ken Vannorsdall, 5701, 89 C30, trfkbs

I've tried to nurse my rudder along for the last 15 years.   I have repaired in the crack in the seams.   I have drilled holes in the bottom of the rudder to allow water drain over winter.   I've even filled the rudder with closed cell foam to push out water and serviced the rudder in a closet with a dehumidifier.

So I think its time to move rudder replacement to the top on this year's list.

Any thoughts on who is best to contact for replacement.

My boat is a 1989 30 tabs with fine keel

Robert,

Congratulations on a resourceful repair that allowed you to finish your trip.  I am sorry your sail was chewed up by a storm, but it's stories like these that make me grateful I am part of a resourceful and knowledgeable group of sailors.

Re: Genoa for sale.

Robert Gogan

Thanks for the info on the luff tape size for my old Cruising Design furler.

Believe it or not I was still using my original 1984 Genoa until this summer when it came unreefed during a gale and tore from the spreader patch to the luff.   This was on the first day of a two week tour of the northern Lake Michigan harbors.  Fortunately, during the Covid pandemic, I purchased a Sailrite sewing machine to make a helm cover and some other accessories for the boat.  I had my nieces haul this up from my home to the Sheboygan harbor where I docked for the night.  I was able to get the genoa down by shimming up the head stay on a boson's chair and cutting the loose threads then unwinding the upper part of the genoa which was wound in the opposite direction to the lower part below the tear.  The Sheboygan yacht club was very generous in allowing me to use their Covid closed dining room to sew the sail back together and resume what turned out to be a great trip. One of the members even provided me with his dacron sail repair tape.

However, it looks like I need a new Genoa for my C-30 tall rig. My patching lasted the rest of the summer, but the sail shape is terrible and I don't trust my repair for future use.  I have to measure my luff length. Some of the offerings on ebay look like they have slightly elongated luffs and mine barely fits on my cruising design furler without room for error.

Yes, it's an old boat, I would not use a broker, just list it on Marketplace and Craigs.

Gene Colvin at Brewer Yacht Sales at Safe Harbor Pilots Point Marina in Westbrook CT. Gene worked for Catalina for years and knows them inside and out. He is well connected. I bought my 1984 Cat 30 from Gene 3 years ago and it was smooth as silk. Gene had 3 or 4 boats onsite so I could comparison shop on the spot. Thank Neptune I brought my checkbook so I could place a down payment that day!  I am very happy with my boat and Gene’s service
