Cafe Philo DC CafePhiloDC@groups.io

Welcome to Café Philo DC Dialogue, a philosophy forum affiliated with Café Philo DC, a live, twice-monthly, moderated philosophical "debate" by and for the general public. Now entering its 21st year, Café Philo DC usually convenes in the Large Meeting Room at the Tenley-Friendship Branch of the DC Public Library, 4450 Wisconsin Ave. NW Washington, DC on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month (and less frequently on the closest Sunday).

Like Café Philo DC, which draws a diverse group for lively face-to-face discussions, the Dialogue is animated by the question: "If politics is too important to be left to the politicians, then isn't thinking too important to be left to any authority other than your own mind?" This virtual philosophy forum is moderated by yours truly, University of Chicago philosophy graduate Ken Feldman. All are welcome, and no formal background in philosophy is required -- just an innate curiosity about the vexing questions of life.

Feel free to engage in ongoing or upcoming meeting topics, or to initiate entirely new ones. I ask only that you keep your comments lucid, civil (i.e., stick to content and refrain from gratuitous ad hominem attacks on fellow interlocutors) and, most importantly, tenaciously "philosophical" (i.e., leave the non-philosophical, strictly political and religious commentary, for example, to other, more appropriate groups and fora).

Notices of, and background material for, Café Philo DC meetings are posted on this site, along with being sent via e-mail. Thank you for your interest.

Best regards,

Ken Feldman

*** NOTICE FOR CAFE PHILO DC MEMBERS ***

Cafe Philo DC has moved from Yahoo Groups to the Groups.io website at https://groups.io/g/CafePhiloDC.

Yahoo says that no new content can be uploaded to the Yahoo Groups site after Monday, Oct. 28 and all posts will be removed on Dec. 14, 2019.  Some email functionality will remain, but it's unclear how that will work and in any case emails distributed through Yahoo Groups after Oct. 28 will not reach all members, will not appear on the Yahoo site, and will not be transferred to the new Groups.io site.  Please do not post messages after Oct. 28 through the Yahoo Groups site.

Subscribed members of CafePhiloDC on Groups.io will automatically receive emails with certain announcements from the moderators, including email notices and background for the twice-monthly Cafe Philo DC meetings as well as other occasional notices.  This method of email distribution will ultimately replace the former, separately-maintained email list--so if you are now on that email list then sooner or later you will need to subscribe as a member of the Groups.io group if you want to continue receiving meeting notices by email.

Subscribed members may also participate in the Cafe Philo DC Dialogue online forum by posting messages that may be viewed on the website as well as distributed by email to other members of the group.  The default setting is for new members to receive by email ONLY the moderator announcements with meeting notices etc.--but each member may then modify their email delivery options on the website in order to also receive some or all member posts by email.  Note that if you want to receive member posts by email then you must log in to the website to change your email delivery options.  But in any case, anyone can view all posts on the website by selecting Messages from the CafePhiloDC home page (in the left-hand column on a computer browser, in the menu at the bottom on a phone).

Further details:

1.  Subscribing.  CafePhiloDC is now located at https://groups.io/g/CafePhiloDC.

You can subscribe to CafePhiloDC in several ways:
(i)  On the home page of the https://groups.io/g/CafePhiloDC website, select either the Sign Up button in the upper right corner of the page (in a drop-down menu on a phone) or the blue +Join this Group button at the bottom of the page;
(ii)  Send an email (no text needed) to CafePhiloDC+subscribe@Groups.io;
(iii)  Reply by email (no text needed) to an email invite sent to you by the moderators through Groups.io; or
(iv)  Select the 'accept the invitation' link at the bottom of an email invite sent to you by the moderations through Groups.io (this last option also allows you to change your subscription preferences as you subscribe).
You may then need to verify your email address if you signed up on the website.

2.  Meeting Notices.  As a subscribed member of CafePhiloDC, you will receive emails with certain notices posted by the moderators.  These generally consist of notices for the twice-monthly Cafe Philo DC meetings--a brief advance notice and a detailed background email for each meeting--but there may also be other moderator announcements from time to time.

Recipients of Cafe Philo DC meeting emails:  In order to reduce the administrative burden, the plan is to replace the former, separately-maintained email list with email distributions through Groups.io.  This may take some time, but eventually you will need to subscribe to CafePhiloDC on Groups.io if you want to continue receiving meeting notices.

3.  Online Dialogue.  CafePhiloDC also hosts Cafe Philo DC Dialogue, its affiliated online discussion forum.  Anyone can view Cafe Philo DC Dialogue posts on the website by selecting Messages from the CafePhiloDC home page (in the left-hand column on a computer browser, in the menu at the bottom on a phone).

As a subscribed member, you may also post messages to Cafe Philo DC Dialogue directly on the website, after logging in to CafePhiloDC with your email address and password.  The first time you log in you will be sent an email with a link that will let you set your password.  Under Group.io's anti-spam procedures, your first post must also be approved by the moderators before you can post freely to the site.

Subscribed members of CafePhiloDC can also elect to receive email distributions of member posts on Cafe Philo DC Dialogue.  The default setting is for new members to receive by email ONLY certain notices from the moderators--so IF you also want to receive email distributions of Cafe DC Dialogue posts then you MUST change your email delivery options.  (If you only want to receive moderator notices then you don't need to do anything.)  To change your email delivery options, log in to the website, go to the CafePhiloDC Home page or Messages page, and select Subscription (in the left-hand column on a computer browser, or in the More menu at the bottom right on a phone; but it's not visible from the Groups page).  You can calibrate the number or frequency of emails you will receive, such as getting them in batches once a day, receiving replies only to topics you have commented upon, or muting certain topics or hashtags entirely.  You can also choose to receive no emails, except that you cannot opt out of notices from the moderators.

As a subscribed member, you can also post messages to Cafe Philo DC Dialogue by sending an email to CafePhiloDC@groups.io.  Like messages posted directly on the website, messages posted by email will appear on the website and will also be distributed by email to those members who have set their email delivery options to receive member posts.  But please post by email ONLY by replying to a post that you received through a Groups.io email distribution (or else to initiate a new topic); composing a de-novo email in response to a post viewed on the website often creates a new discussion thread for that topic, which makes it more difficult for others to follow the discussion.

Like the old Yahoo site, the website is public and anyone can view the Cafe Philo DC Dialogue online posts.  If you plan to post, you are strongly encouraged to modify your Profile to include a Display Name that will appear on your posts on the website and email distributions.  To modify your Profile, log in to the website, go to the CafePhiloDC Home page or Messages page, select Subscription (in the left-hand column on a computer browser, or in the More menu at the bottom right on a phone), and select Group Profile and then Edit Group Profile.  Using an initial or abbreviation other than your full last name is recommended as a matter of general internet hygiene; more obscure handles are also allowed, but for those who attend the Cafe Philo DC meetings in person at least a first name would be appreciated so that the rest of us can put a face to your posts.  Also note that your email address is masked (after the @ sign) on the website--but we think that, depending on the recipients' internet provider, it might appear on any posts which are distributed by email (regardless of whether you posted them by email or directly on the site).

This new site is very much in beta, trial-and-error mode (and Groups.io is also overwhelmed by the Yahoo Groups shutdown), so please be patient.  There may be glitches and you may get some superfluous emails at first.

4.  Transfer from Yahoo Groups.  The current plan is to copy everything from the Yahoo Groups site to the Groups.io site.  That may take a few weeks.  All existing posts and (probably) attachments should be copied over to the new site.  In addition, we understand that all subscribed members of the Yahoo Groups site--except for those who have joined the Groups.io group directly in the meantime using the same email address--will be added to the Groups.io site with the same subscription preferences that they had on the Yahoo site.  Any inactive members whose email addresses repeatedly get bounced will be removed.  Any email posts distributed through Yahoo Groups after Oct. 28 will not be on the Yahoo site and so will NOT be transferred to the new Groups.io site.  Current members are requested to sign up now for the Groups.io group rather than to wait for the automatic transfer.

5.  Privacy and Security.  As noted above, the Groups.io group is public so that anyone can view all posts on the website--but the group is not listed in the Groups.io Public Directory so someone will need the website address or a link in order to find it.  The member directory is visible only to moderators.  As noted above, Groups.io will mask email addresses (after the @ sign) in posts on the website--but your address might not be masked when your post is also distributed to members by email.  The .io domain is that of the British Indian Ocean Territory and is run by a British company (see Wikipedia).  While Groups.io appears to be quite professional and to make its money by charging organizers, rather than by selling user data, we can't tell for sure and it's up to you to review their terms of service, privacy policy, etc. in light of your own privacy and security concerns.

Thanks and best regards.  Let's hope this works.
