Huge #'s of Brown Pelicans? #'s

Dan Cooper

Back in late April we had a big influx of adult Brown Pelicans in the Los Angeles area, presumably due to large-scale nest failures south of the border. A few weeks later they seemed to have departed, and now (when we normally get a lot of both young and adult birds pouring in) there are relatively few around, at least in the usual roost sites (e.g., Santa Monica Bay). I'm wondering if anyone's seen big numbers elsewhere along the coast. Checking eBird I noticed that La Jolla may have seen a bump in numbers in May/June, but triple-digit counts are hard to find just checking random eBird hotspots. Did they keep going north? Circle back south to Mexico? Channel Islands?

So my question is, has anyone had hundreds (or thousands) of pelicans in CA in the past month or so, and if so, where?

Thanks, and feel free to email me offline, but maybe others would be curious too.

In Santa Cruz County, triple digit numbers of Brown Pelicans are occurring in association with Sooty Shearwater feeding frenzies, in locations such as Seacliff State Beach. Additional birds are regularly roosting on an abandoned cement ship at the same location. I haven't recorded numbers or paid attention to adult/juvenile ratios (although photos show of a mixture of ages; I'll check on this), but several hundred birds at a time hasn't been unusual.

I've posted an image here Rio Del Mar Beach - feeding frenzy photo - LT Jaeger photos at pbase.com if anyone is interested.
