Re: BIG PROBLEM WITH LANGUAGE! (was: Re: [BrothersKeeperGenealogy] 7.5 install: two language choices?)

John Steed

When you run the BKSETUP7.EXE install program, the first screen asks what language to use DURING THE INSTALL PROCESS.

That affects the screens in the install program.  It does not affect how the Brother's Keeper program runs.

The Last screen of the install process asks which languages to have available in the BK program.  It installs the .BKW files for each language that you pick.

When you run BK, it will show at most 4 buttons at the bottom for different languages.  However, you can pick any number of languages for BK.  Just pick from the top Help, Change Language, and then you will get a list of ALL the language files, including English and you can pick from that list.  If you have changed to a language you do not understand, pick Help from the top menu (it is the one furthest to the right) then click the Second line down, and that is Change Language.  Then look for English or whatever language you want.

If you want more than 4 languages, it might be less confusing if you turn OFF the language buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Pick Help, Change Language, and near the bottom is an option to show language buttons.  UNcheck that and click OK and you will not see those buttons, but you can use Help, Change Language to change.

What I meant about the installation wizard is that I never saw another language there even if I choose to get the interface in French.

But whatever language you choose at this point, it has no consequence on the installation of BK.  You choose the language(s) to install when BK asks for it.

But if you don't need another language, there is no point in installing one.  I do because I answer questions on BK on a French forum and because I did the translation in French of John's manual.  But it might get confusing to have all these buttons at the bottom of your screen, as you experienced yourself.

In my version of Word (and others) hold down the Alt key then press F9.  This should show or hide the field codes; the “ xe” code you are displaying is to create an index.

G’day to All Brothers Keeper’s user,

I’m wondering if anybody knows of a quick way of removing the [highlighted commands] in my Wood 2010 genealogical reports.

I convert my .RTF files to Word 2000 files and these files are normally on the large size and I end up spending a lot of my time going through my report and removing the [highlighted commands] manually.

Since you use MS Word you can create a macro to turn off hidden text.

I created a macro that takes the RTF file and creates the Index from those entries, puts page numbers and creation date on the report and turns off the hidden text.

All my BK folders are off the root (C:) directory (folder). I right click on the Stewart folder (C:\stewart) and compress it. It puts stewart.zip on the desktop. I backup the zip file.

All dat, also the dabase of BK and all Picture and all mail and al  Family photo and document etc for the Whole fmily are backup to the sky automatically.

The backup is the first way for the database of BK if something happen to the database. I put thedataback to the same Place on the PC. It a safety for the working base and is easy and rapid.

I use copy and paste moving the Whole database from PC to PC as I have several in use for different reason. When I have education for New users I use a Laptop and then I cioy the DATA and subfolder from my main PC to the Laptop. In that situation the Copy/paste With MemoryStick is the most easy.

Bu when i tell the users to take backup we use the USBstick and the routine of BK and learn then to take 3-4 backupm regular.

These are INDEX entries for the index at the end of the document

They are also HIDDEN commands  and formatting marks and should not print in printed paper documents.  Or even in PDF.

This might help if your settings are arranged  to do such.

However, there are other  settings in MS-Word 2010

Under [Menu item <File><Options>]  are a range of settings.  See here:-

This will change the action of the Image non-printable above.

Hello Kenneth,
I run an earlier version of MS Office Word and for that I don’t need to delete those embedded codes.  I understand that they are placed there by BK so as to create an index of the entries involved.  Presumably you asked BK to prepare an index of records when you sent it to Word.  In my Word program it disregards the imbedded stuff and prints just the main information – what you haven’t highlighted.  I might be wrong with your version of Word but have a go with leaving all the imbedded stuff in there and see if Word prints the RTF and index.  Would save you a lot of effort.

Indeed. Except if you select all the languages, it limits to four buttons, rather than 21 - and the languages appearing on those are the first five .bkw files it finds.

As for the language selection on the blue general installation screen,
it should apply only to this.screen (but I never saw a language other

It actually offers a choice of 8, though I've never tried other than English. I'm guessing that choice determines what the rest of the installation process itself uses, perhaps (up to the point where you get the choice of 22 - which I _think_ is new with 7.5, I certainly don't remember seeing it before).
