Apparently last night according to SpaceWeather we got hit with a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm, which sent some auroras as far south as New Mexico (pretty much the same lat. as Arizona). There were even some reports of a "STEVE" (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement).
Apparently this is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as a purple and green light ribbons among the auroras, but are not auroras. The one spotted during last night's event happened to be an odd red color.
"Keep looking up!"
