Staunton River Star Party
George Reynolds
Bob, I am getting my stuff ready for the SRSP. I have never been there before. I am planning on taking food and cooking my meals on a propane camp stove. What amenities do they have there? Is there a water supply? Is there a grocery store on the way or nearby, or do I have to cart all my food in from home? Can we pitch our tents near where we will have our telescopes? Is there a place we can buy ice? Any info you can give me from your experience will help; George George Reynolds "Solar System Ambassador" for South Hampton Roads, Virginia Back Bay Amateur Astronomers (BBAA) http://www.backbayastro.org |

George,
The facilities are very nice. Power on the field (bring an extension cord). Yes tents right next to the telescopes. Bathroom and store adjacent to the field we set up in. Showers are down near the cafe. The cafe is open for all meals and late night snacks - it was nice for socializing and coffee and hot chocolate. I bought a bottomless mug which is supposed to be good every year. Night sure I will bother cooking anything since the cafe does such a good job. Although your bacon at the James River Star Party was pretty good. Don't remember if the store stocked any food items. But, one day I did drive into town to Walmart to get a new tent after mine kept blowing down. I think that was about a 15 to 20 minute drive. There were ice machines at the store. Here is a video I made of the spring event. It has some shots of the store and the field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jupm_4S1S00 Jonathan |

I haven't been in 5 or 6 years and can't go this year due to a commitment the Saturday of the star party.
