Launch for all time

Oh about that launch. I saw it Saturday night from a dark sky (which hardly made a difference). I looked through a tree and for the life of me thought WTF is that?? It was like the best comet you have seen but multiply it by 50. Was close to what the dinosaurs must have seen. It was that big. Pictures don't do it justice, believe me. I called all the people I don't like and told them what I thought of them figuring thee end of the world was at hand and nothing to lose..........................have some apologizing to do today! Seriously it was the most impressive surprise in the sky I have seen. I have seen shuttle launches for close to Kennedy and saw the challenger tragedy which of course was more impactful. But for sheer visual spectacle this was it. Just huge.

Was eating on the deck at Bubba's by Lesner Bridge last night when all of a sudden everyone in the restaurant was pointing out over the water to the south. I looked up and my first impression was that it was a helo flying at us with a search light on because it was low in the sky and it was shining down on the water (it was that bright!). It was about as slow as a helo also. Then I noticed the curly trails of its leftover plume behind it. Could not believe how bright it was. It took a good long time to get from just above the horizon to over the roof and out of sight. Was going to run to the parking lot to see the rest of it but my food was getting cold. I was so stunned by it that I didn't grab my phone until it was almost over. Then spent the rest of the time trying to figure what it was.Looked up the NASA pages for the Artemis launch but wasn't that. Didn't occur to me to look for SpaceX.

Thanks to Bill and YRSP for setup and sponsoring the Star Party.  We had a very full and interesting party.

Starting with a UFO or UAP, which turned out to be a missile launch from Canaveral.  Thanks for the beautiful photos from Troy and his wife.

We had a great turn out from Williamsburg and William and Mary. I showed Jupiter, Saturn, NGC 457 (Owl Cluster), M8  (The Lagoon Nebula)

M20 (The Trifid Nebula), M22, Albireo, Polaris, and Mizar.

The end of the Night hike  brought us about 25 boy scouts and there Scout masters.  And a very active group of young boys.

Bob
