My Telescopes. (Was Re: [BackBayAstro] Fw: Last night observing)

In lieu of using my 10-inch Dob, I have access to Samantha's 8-inch Orion Dob.  It's her scope, but it lives at my house, and I have her permission to use it.

I also use the 6-inch Orion Starblast reflector Chuck Jagow gave me as a going-away present.  (HIS going away, not mine.)  It is a great scope, and I'm thankful for it.  I was able to help a new person at Skywatch (Kelly) set up her Orion 6-inch Starblast and show her how to use it.

And of course, I have my little Orion ShortTube 80mm refractor, which I use all the time, mostly for outreach events.

You're right, Bill, but SOME DAY, if the club has a mirror-cleaning workshop, I will clean the mirror in my 10-inch Dob.

I actually haven't used it in several years.  It needs some repair.  I need to replace the Teflon sliders for azimuth rotation.  I also have a new focuser I want to put on it, but I will need to drill some new holes.  I just need to get a round tuit.

Never clean it. Unless a bird pooped on it or someone spilled a Mars tini on it. I have compared George's 10inch which has the dust of Nebuchadnezzar on it with my clean 10inch and  could see no difference dim or bright object. Run the comparison yourself. I doubt George has cleaned it yet.

When you find the round tuits let me know cause I've lost mine.

After I gave mine away to George, I got to missing it and found another one on Astro-Mart, guy said it was in “new” condition.  First time I ever felt burned after an Astro-Mart transaction.  To get the Intelliscope function working, I had to call Orion and sweet talk them out of one of their very last kits that turn a regular 6” StarBlast into and Intelliscope StarBlast, cost me nearly 1.5 times as much as a brand new StarBlast 6i.  At the time Orion had discontinued the 6i StarBlast.  Since then, I have seen them online in the Orion site a few times.

Orion’s catalog of available items changes with every shipment received in the Port of Los Angeles.

I’ll never understand Orion’s policy of dropping products off their website instead of just listing them as out of stock. I’m sure many people reacted the same way my club did when the Star Blast disappeared – we assumed it was discontinued and went looking for alternate products and sources. (For library telescopes).

We finally went to E-bay and found what we wanted, but all three scopes we’ve purchased that way have arrived needing focuser repair.

Chuck,

I'm sorry you missed your 6" Starblast, and had to pay so much to replace it.  I do appreciate the gift though.  But if you come back, I'd be willing to give it back to you.
