Impressive! Especially considering conditions. There have been many supposedly clear nights here when I could not see the Crescent nebula with my 18” Dob.

I agree on the seeing. 8 at best. No oxygen in the air. IC 4665 was pretty along with it's NGC neighbor. NGC 6572 was a lot of fun in both scopes. Who says you can't use a 1.6mm eyepiece? I looked at M-11 with all powers. I think that 40x is the prettiest. It takes on a shine like so many globulars do at low power. They tend to lose that shine at higher powers though you see more detail. It may also require a refractor to see that shine. May not. Also noticed that the tightest pair in the double double has a quite color diffrenece between the two. Not so much for the brighter pair.

The Ring Nebula is "fun" to see in a 6" refractor at high power. That is, until you've been spoiled forever and have seen it in a really big reflector at ANY POWER!

IC 4756 open cluster. Nice, large object.

I remember seeing The Crescent Nebula in Roy Diffrient's 18" beautiful homemade Dobsonian from the dark, Coinjock skies. Believe me, what I saw in the 6" from Va Beach couldn't match that view by a long shot!

Yes I was just going over my charts. They all are in a row. I made a mistake last night and assumed that a dense portion of 6623 was a separate cluster. It is not now that I see it on Sky tools. I have a list of things to do in the future. One problem with star charts in print is they really don't go into depth or show enough stars for identification. Lots of small stuff is left out. I usually do my best by doing homework prior to observing but that requires discipline which I sometimes fail at ! At that the electronic star chart at the telescope is better. Since I creamed my last I pad while chasing an early morning comet I can't justify replacing it at the moment. I don't know what is softer, my brain or my wallet.

Thanks Kent! We had a lot of wonderful, just great times at Coinjock of course. Oh my, I’m sure we all miss that! That 18” f/4.5 Dob is thoroughly enjoyable. But I’m happy to report that the 28” f/3.6 I built is even better and more enjoyable. But here in the rainforest I still don’t see the central star in the Ring Nebula very often, and sometimes it’s still tough to see the Crescent Nebula. How large a scope would it take to fix all that? Oh, 6.5 meters a million miles out in space should do it.

Seeing the central star in The Ring Nebula is surely perplexing. I've seen it in the 25" from Coinjock. When seeing is superb I've even seen it at 500x from my backyard in the 25". Yet, when seeing is just average I've failed to see it in Coinjock skies more times than I care to mention!
We often have 10/10 seeing here on the coast, usually during summer months. |
