Observing Sunday May 22 2022
I've been threatening to replace the focuser on my 16" f/6.2 Dobsonian for 25 years. I finally made the move. After changing out the focuser, never as easy as task as one might think I wanted to test

Planetary Nebulae
Ted, my notes from 2013 mention the same, the UHC (in my case the Orion UltraBlock) was better than the OIII. I figured I might have a chance with the OIII Type 3 but no such luck.

Planetary Nebulae
I rolled out the 16" f/6 last night in the very light polluted skies of Virginia Beach. Have any of you seen the illusive planetary nebula NGC 4361 in Corvus? It's an easy target with large telescopes

The Sun Today
There are some nice surface details on the sun this morning (May 17, 2022). Here's a quick B&W and color picture I took early morning when the seeing was good.

Yes, the seeing is very good. Mark O just dropped by with his Herschel Wedge for a wonderful view of the sunspots.

Lunar Eclipse
Although not my best eclipse exposure I like this one best because it shows the double star HR 5756 just before being occulted. The primary is 6.3 magnitude, and the secondary is 8.9. Of course, with

Lets see what the Darkness scales from last night's eclipse come out to be.
Well that surely stinks.

Tales of the South Pacific (Hunga Tonga Volcano particulate).........er Chesapeake Eclipse
I was overwhelmed, such a gorgeous eclipse. I watched most of the end of the eclipse at home.

Photographing the lunar eclipse
Let's hope we have at least ~some~ clearing Sunday night. I posted this on BBAA Facebook page but in case you're not on Facebook here it is. It's always worked for me. Remember use the "300" rule if y

Prominences at 10:45 am April 27
Hush. don't tell anyone I like imagining. But my real passion is still sticking my eye up to the eye lens of an eyepiece. Kent

Mark O. is right, there are a couple of nice prominences on the sun today in H-alpha light. Here's an eyepiece projection picture taken with an old Celestron 25mm eyepiece though a Coronado 40mm scope

Challenging double stars
I had to use a 4mm eyepiece in my 150mm telescope to split the double star Struve 1426 in Leo last night. With a separation of 0.9" that's close to the theoretical limit of a 6". At 280x it wasn't all

Just checked the sun now at 0945. Flare is done and mostly gone.
I saw it also, but not when it "flared". I saw a bright orange spot and just assumed it had been there some time. As Mark said, within 20 minutes it was GONE. Wow, we are indeed fortunate. Are we inde

The very ACTIVE sun
Not only did Mark and I see a solar flare with our H-alpha scopes (he saw it happening, I saw it a few minutes after) but there are also so wonderful sunspots in white light filters over binoculars or

Procyon
Despite a mostly cloudy night seeing was excellent Wednesday, April 13, 2022. I was only able to see Procyon and the moon but managed to split Procyon. Like Sirius and The Pup, Procyon A and Procyon B
