Hey Mark, glad you've gotten settled in and thanks for sharing your observations. I haven't had a lot of nights either observing or shooting this summer. Looking forward to seeing you at ECSP.

Cheers

Ian

Where has the time gone? After a period of somewhat unsettled arrangements, I finally had a night like the old days here in the new digs in Williamsburg. I don't say this lightly but the sky tonight was as good as Pungo in the old days. This was the first time to really use the Televue 4 inch Genesis under great conditions. It did not disappoint. I am astounded a refractor handled everything I threw at it deep sky wise. Having had several fine refractors, this one is the only one I would truly call a deep sky observing tool. It is not so good on planets but oh the views tonight.  I took on NGC globulars that normally would be handled by a 10 to 13 inch scope. No problem. The sky was ten for ten tonight. Just like the old days. I was able to see the entire Veil with a 35 panoptic in one field of view. Even the dim middle part was seen. The milky way just smoked. Tried the Vixen 42 mm binoculars. Ted you were right they are great. Like having owl eyes. Ignore the margins and just enjoy the straight on view. Dark nebula show very well in contrast to the starry background. Wish Kent could have been here like the old days. Radio was on, sky was dark and the temperature was fine. Did not want to quit. Best night in 3 or 4 years. Nice to be home.

Barring high water or back ache, I will be there. I do not think I will bring a scope unless you think I should.

Looked good here too, Mark.  Best I've seen since May.  But as usual, I had something else to do - Get ready for Stellafane.  Glad someone got out.

Another t-shirt order

Shawn Loescher

I have been asked to submit another order for the t-shirt design. If anyone is interested in ordering another t-shirt or their first t-shirt let me know. The cost will be about $23 a shirt since I expect this order to be smaller. I will submit the order on Monday (August 8th). I will be at the meeting on Thursday so you can pay for this shirt with cash or check then or send it to me with PayPal. If you need my PayPal address send me a message since I don’t want to post my email in public.

I still have t-shirts from the first order that have not been picked up. The shirts are for Vince Pendleton, Paul Beitz, Jeff Singer, and Gregory Faircloth. I will have the shirts at the club meeting so I hope to see you there.

Just to be clear the shirts I am ordering are NOT the same shirts that Chuck ordered. Those are polo shirts.

There are some beautiful filaments today; one looks 3-D near the western limb, with a few prominences flaring off of it. Check it out in H-alpha light.

Glad you made it to our part of the event, "secret shopper" Michael.  I didn't even see you there.

Due to us having company over the weekend, I attended this event as a guest rather than as a member (otherwise I would have been there with my telescope).  Since it was dark, I was able to "secret shop" the club.  The members who were there did a fantastic job of showing off the night sky to the revelers at the event.  The atmosphere where the club was set up was quite different than the loud, pulsing party going on up front.  I think the partygoers appreciated being able to take a break from the overstimulating activities to just contemplate the heavens.  The seeing was outstanding, and that Iridium flare was a real treat.

My only complaint would be Hunt Club needs to have better signage directing people to the back.  Though I did hear the band playing up front announce that the club was set up in the back, they said "we don't know where that is."
