Princess Anne Hunt Club event last night

Kent Blackwell

Whenever there's an astronomical outreach event "For Adults Only" count Kent in! The hunt club's event was called "Blue Moon A-Paloosa". The event coordinators invited our astronomy club, The Back Bay Amateur Astronomers to participate.

First, I should explain "Blue Moon" refers to the beer, not the astronomical event. That explains why it was for those 21 years of age and older.

We were a significant distance from the main activities areas, but that ended up being a good thing, since we couldn't possibly have accommodated the size of the crowd, well over 1000 people. Those who ventured to the telescopes were treated to views of Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, M-57 (The Ring Nebula), globular clusters and other celestial delights. Everyone was enamored with what they saw.

We told the crowd to look just below the constellation Cygnus at 10:03 pm. Why? Because they would be treated to a -8 magnitude Iridium satellite. It was SO BRILLIANT. Everyone applauded afterward. Wow, what a treat. But one minute later they were also treated to another naked eye delight; the International Space Station that passed from the northwest to the northeast.

All in all, it was a wonderful night. The seeing and transparency were spectacular, despite the fact it was cloudy all day. The temperature couldn't have been more comfortable. The crowd was delightful, everyone was in such good spirits, and all seemed to be having a great time.

I think most will agree BBAA contributed significantly at the beautiful Princess Anne Farm. Our telescopes ranked first in activities. Well, maybe just under the cute goats in the petting zoo section. One just can't hope to compete with cute animals!

Hi everyone,

Here are a couple of images from my astrophotography adventure to Shenandoah National Park earlier this month. Man, I love the mountains!

Thanks for looking!

Here's the view of the Iridium flare from York County. Surely not as spectacular as what you guys saw!

I don't think the ISS will be very bright and will rise in the northwest and pass below the bowl of the Big Dipper. Iridium 37, on the other hand will be very bright and flare just below Cygnus.

I hope to be at the event but probably without a telescope. I'll fill in for anyone though, if you need a break at your scope.

Re: ISS pass and Iridium flare tonight

I was just reading about the Iridium company: how they nearly went bankrupt, I guess as the need for satellite communications was supplanted be cell technology. Motorola bought Iridium or something and new satellite constellations are planned- like thousands. I never thought about the purpose of the Iridiums.

I mix up what I read with stuff I see on the interweb or dreams or youtubes.

Does anyone know about this?

Some time later-

Nevermind- everything's on Wikipedia: Iridium Communications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On another note: A new girl at the ticket booth at the botanical gardens said her name was Iridium. I thought I was hearing things and asked her again. Is her father a communications engineer? An astronomer? A chemist?

There will be an ISS pass and Iridium flare tonight at the "Blue Moon Festival, within ONE minute of each other.

Iridium 37 at 22:03:25, 43° altitude, 75° (ENE) azimuth, mag. -8

ISS starts 22:04:59, 10° altitude, WNW; highest point 22:06:54, 14° alt., NNW; end 22:08:48, 10° alt., N.

Ah! I see now. It looks like the peak magnitude under the ground track is magnitude -8 whereas it will only reach magnitude -1 from the peninsula near the Grundland Astronomy Park. That's quite a difference!

Re: ISS pass and Iridium flare tonight

Thanks for the heads-up, George. I notice on the Heavens-Above website that there is a map showing the flare center over the Earth's surface. Do you need to be along that path to see the flare or is it visible off the path by some margin? It looks well placed for Virginia Beach!
