Two large solar prominences

Kent Blackwell

There are two large prominences of the eastern limb. I wonder if we'll have another huge sunspot. The one last week was the largest in 25 years.

How neat! In case you weren't at ECSP Bob B. was flying a minature drone, outfiltted with digital camera aboard. Awesome pictures, Bob.

What was most amazing at the cookout, you might ask? I only ate ONE hamburger and nothing else!

Trust me: after dealing with military and some cryptographic items for two-thirds of my career, even the smallest light bulb has to be totally destroyed for the government to be satisfied. If they find one melted, charred, cracked bit of crypto equipment in that wreckage (or would that be carnage?), they'll smash it to powder before declaring the site "clean".

So on the news this morning, they stated that there was classified payload onboard and the entire scene was off limits until they could determine that the classified items were in fact destroyed.  Hard to believe anything could have survived that explosion.

Good point, Jim.  But I’ll bet the rest of us would like to see some of those shots too if they’re ready for viewing.

Ten ECSP photos finally uploaded.  But I got nothing from that wild & crazy bunch at the south end of Imager’s Row.  Anyone have any photos (or should I say “evidence”)?  Hey, what happens at ECSP stays at ECSP!

Re: Solar eclipse at ECSP

Kent Blackwell

Thanks, Roy.

The number of total eclipses Robert Hitt and I have observed stands at 14; the first being from my backyard in on March 7, 1970. Since then we have traveled to Canada, The Indian Ocean off the cost of Africa, Mexico, South America, South China Sea, Caribbean, Greece, Cape Town, between Easter Island and Pitcain Island (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame), Egypt, the Arctic Circle, off the coast of Iwo Jima and finally Australia.

The only one clouded out was the Arctic Circle. But we knew it was going to be cloudy so 700 passengers on the cruise ship Disvovery partied all day instead of worrying about what lens and what exposure to use to photography it!

An eclipse cruise is the way to go to see an eclipse. The ship can move to clear places along the path, drastically increasing your chances of clear skies.

Certainly can tell who is the eclipse expert!  How many does this make, Kent?  Do you have to count them by five’s or ten’s?  Or have you lost count after all these years?

What a lovely site we had to view the solar eclipse, on the causeway near Hampton Lodge campground. It couldn't have been more beautiful.

I posted two pictures in a folder labeled sunset solar eclipse. One taken through my 80mm f/6 TMB refractor and another wide-angle shot with a 40 year old Leica 180mm lens. Wow, I had to shoot it at 1/8000-second!

Re: Launch

It really is a tragedy. It's a huge step back because people were starting to get into space flight again since things were going really well. Now people are going to be terrified of space flight. I mean it is a scary thing but it is necessary so I fear that it took a big hit with the general public yesterday. Not to mention we will see if orbital sciences lose their 1.9 billion dollar contract! Where they lose, spaceX will probably gain. I remember standing outside ODU looking for it when the launch was scrubbed then I forgot about it yesterday but heard not 2 minutes after the explosion about it(I was in the physics building so lots were watching). Good thing it wasn't manned! Wondering what happened. If it were a fuel leak I feel like it would have blown up in the air rather than just a bit of an explosion since the fuel tank was full. Possible that it wasn't up to temperature properly.. Who knows. That thing blew to kingdom come. That will be quite the csi scene.

Yeah... watched it live on NASA TV! Once I saw that rocket motor start to flare I had just enough time to think it, and by the time I said it, a mushroom cloud was forming. Sad.
