Getting the knob on the shaft

Kit Peters

I'll pause for the inevitable snickering...

So I replaced the encoder on my uBITX and the knob doesn't seem to want to fit on the shaft. It seems to be the same diameter as the old one. Any suggestions for getting it on there?

An underside pic of your knob (only sinkering is here) will give us some
ideas to share with you.

I'm not sure if this is the problem for you, but I face similar all the time between US/euro-asian controls and knobs; If it's a 6mm hole, then it must be opened to 1/4"...maybe that's what's going on ???

Photo of both knob and shaft. It looks like the knob is too small, but I'm pretty sure it came off the old encoder.

Loosen the set screw on the top and then push down on it -- you need to let the leaves of the clamp expand.

Oh! I didn't realize there was a set screw. Boy, do I feel dumb now. :D

No, I take that back. I don't see a set screw anywhere on the knob

The knob for my Antuino has a compression screw under the cap of the knob.  You need to carefully pry off the cover and loosen the large slotted screw.  Open so that you can fit the knob on the shaft, then tighten snugly.

I do not have a v6 uBiTX, so not sure if it uses the same tuning knob.

Kit,
I went back and finally could look at your picture.  That is the underside of the knob that is on my Antuino, so flip it over and pry off the plastic cover on the other side.  Loosen the slotted compression fitting then slip on the knob and tighten.

The latest V6 tuning knobs have 2 set screws in the knob , both set screws use a regular small  screwdriver.

Kit,
Here is a picture of the other side of the knob with the cover off.

You will need to remove your cover (it pries off), loosen the screw, and you may need to push in on the screw if the compression part was pulled up far and became bound.

I believe that you bough an AmatureRadioKits.in case for your uBITX.  That is one that I bought and with a v5 board in the picture.

Kit, on the front of the knob there should be a cover that can be removed. There is a nut that when loosen will allow for the knob to slip on the shaft.

Thanks, all - I got it figured out with your help. The knob and the shaft are together again. ;)

It's a collect knob. Open the cap by prying it on the front side.
You will see a screw, loosen it and the collect for the shaft will
open to larger size. Fit on shaft, tighten screw and add the cap.

"collect" = Collet?

Yes, obviously the spell check does not know we are talking about
a knob!
