I use the Softrock 50 amp. It is a 50w 80-10 amp. It is a kit. It has optional internal tuner. They are now introducing a 100 watt version

I believe that he meant Hardrock 50. At least that matches the description and the press release on a 100wat version now available. We have had some of our club build club builders build that amp and are very happy with it. 73 Evan |

While I have built several amps the general thing is at home if I need more than
50W I just power up the 100W radios (TS440A/At, Tentec Triton, Tentec Eagle, or IC7300). I feel none of the QRP radios offer the user conveniences of the 100W radios. So QRP at home is a point tather than a reason to power up a amp. Then again building amps are in itself interesting. In the field I have to consider the band and the planned operation. The IC7300 or Tentec Eagle are both under 12 pounds with mic. The FT817, SB1, KNQ7A or others with outboard amp plus cables easily out run that for bulk and weight. The 100W radios offers more operating features and built in antenna tuner if needed. That was HF, VHF and up the game changes and I have some small bricks in the 100w range I built for HB 6, 2M, or FT817, and Tentec 6n2. Then again its a portable vs station call for what used. The kit for $209.00 looks all OK to me, but I would like to know how much soldering does it require for someone who has not been soldering for 57 years like I have been doing. Other than that, it looks like a winner to me.

Soldering isn’t any different than bike riding. The only changes in 57 years is the type of soldering iron (or pencil. We don’t use a Weller soldering gun any more). They come in many flavors but I like to use a fine tip, high heat, get in and melt the solder and get out. Larger tip for things like coax connectors, etc. Don’t even think of lead free solder. It works but has its own issues. Look at the manual and you should be able to see how many parts come in bags and needing to be soldered. No difference between one part and a bag of parts except the time to do it all. I have not built that kit but it looks easy. Dave K8WPE David J. It was not to hard to assemble. Most of the parts on the main pcb are already populated. The hardest part was winding the torroids. Jim offers a link where you can purchase the torriods

Well, blind hams are special. I would hope that the ham radio community would take special care of you, and make sure that you had everything that you needed. I gave away my Elecraft KX-2, but it sent the frequency in CW, and
you might find a KX-3 or KX-4 to be helpful. I have asked for a version of a WA2EBY amplifier that can be assembled with only a screwdriver, but so far I have not gotten any response about that from India. If you need an amplifier for a QRP transceiver,
and you know someone who will put it together for you let me know, and I will send him a kit for an EB63A.

I know what you mean about the bug being heavier than the KX3. I have a genuine Lightning Bug, with its carry case. The serial number says it was "hatched out" in 1956. If I took it out of the case, I could probably get a couple of QCX-Minis, along with a set of batteries and a mini antenna tuner in the case.

I’ve actually got a couple 100-watt rigs (Kenwood TS-440, which doesn’t have a cw filter, and I’m mostly a cw operator…so haven’t been motivated to do much with it. Bought it because I wanted one when I was a teenager…) And a K2/100. Still, a bit of power for the KX3 wouldn’t be a bad thing. My dad was in Vietnam. Army. That’s where he met my mom. I own four different bugs, and none of them is a Vibroplex. Three of the four were had on eBay for under $100 each. I have a Cedar Rapids bug, a Les Logan SpeedX (I think it’s a 515), it came with the original accessories leaflet. Also a Lionel J-36, which I understand is the same design as a Vibroplex lightning bug. And an Electro radio bug, which I understand was the precursor to SpeedX.
