Rugged Case Options? #ubitx

Kent Vanderploeg

My uBitx showed up yesterday, so I'm hoping to get it tested out on the bench this weekend.  My goal is to make a rugged version out of this, preferably in a die cast or extruded case.  I like the looks of this, and it would provide an option to include an internal power supply to run directly off of A/C power, but I'm not a fan of the price.

Many of these just don't come wide enough to accommodate mounting the board directly with the display still attached.  We need at least 6" for that. Anyone else found a good rugged case like this with dimensions that will work and a price tag that isn't half the cost of the uBitx?

On a side note, once the radio is proven and tested, is there any reason I couldn't hot glue the toroids to the board for stability?

Yeah, I've looked at Hammond's cases, and there is nothing in their extruded lines that is tall enough (or if it is tall enough, it's not wide enough).  The die cast enclosure are strong enough, but make it difficult to mount and service, though I've used these for several other projects.

I did just stumble onto this, which is better.  Maybe a bit deeper than I'd like, but not bad.  The price is certainly better.  I'll have to measure to see if the board would interfere, or if the slots would work as expected.

Not rugged - and the height will make it a tight squeeze - but the XL case kit from Four State QRP Group might work, and at $17 it's a steal.  http://www.4sqrp.com/Enclosures.php

That may be a tight squeeze vertically.  I ended up ordering the second case I linked to.  We'll see how it pans out.

I plan on building my ubitx into a metal ammo can. Either a small 30cal version or a so called "fat 50". These are cheap rugged and fully waterproof.

Would be a great cottage industry venture.  But... would need the hole cut for the display! de KG9H

Looks like this case will work with some room to spare.  Thought about trying to add a little internal power supply to run directly off of A/C power, when available.

What is the model number of your case and where can it be purchased?

This was the second case I listed in the thread (above).  I ordered from these guys on Friday and got it today.  A bit more than I wanted to pay, but it's a solid case.

Looks like they have one in stock, and that appears to be real-time.  When I ordered, it showed two and dropped to one immediately after my order.

It would be easy to make that type enclosure shorter if you wanted to and had a carbide chop saw. Willy

Very true, though I'm not too concerned about it.  Might even build a 18650 pack to put inside for a built in power option.

I think eventually I'm going to build one in a lunchbox.

And apparently my uBitx arrived at home --- but I won't get off work for a couple more hours so no reports on it yet....

I ordered a couple of these, good price:
    https://www.jameco.com/z/CMC11949-R-Case-Metal-7-3-L-x-6-3-W-x-2-75-H-50-Cs_208929.html
No idea how thick the sheet metal is.

The bigger one you ordered would be better if you want to add stuff inside, and/or want more panel space.
Mine will be cramped across the width for a uBitx, but has room towards the rear for a battery and SWR detector.
Will report back once I get my hands on it.

Any thoughts or anyone even used it?

Looks like a pretty good option too!
