I am in the process of re-purposing a very old microphone as you can see in they lower picture, FEB 1944.  A new microphone cable should be here next week.   The carbon element inside was bad so I went for a MAX9812 Microphone on a board for $1.75 on eBay.  This microphone was not from a telephone.  Any guesses?

Max your uBITX has three trim pots on it. Two are blue square unit labeled RV2 and RV3 these are together on the board and adjust the bias to the finals. The third one is RV1 which adjusts the drive level. There are instructions in the the file section on the group site to adjust the bias pots which may help improve your ssb output if yours isn’t set high enough.
Try searching the archives to learn about it and the pitfalls you might encounter.

From board to board there will always be some variation of gain.

You can increasing the mic gain by reducing the resistor

BITX40 - R123
uBITX - R63

You could try the mic gain control I described recently.

You could also increase the drive

BITX40 - R136
uBITX - RV1

I think something needs to be done.  As someone who is new to ubitx I have found information all over the www and when the information on one site conflicts with another there is no way to tell which one is correct.  I find it frustrating and I’ll bet other new members of the community feel the same way.

Twiddling the bias pots is dangerous, can easily blow the IRF510's.
The bias pots get set at the factory for around 100ma of drain current
as described in the tuneup section on hfsignals.com.
Output will become more non-linear as those bias pots get turned down,
and quiescent transmit power consumption goes up as they get turned up. 
Not much of an effect on power out.  I suggest you not mess with them.

The drive pot at RV1 on the uBitx does directly affect power out,
also the resistor in the mike amp that Raj pointed out for you.

Be aware that too much drive to the final will splatter all over the band.

Interesting.  That picture has no indication as to which is positive and which is negative.  If I didn’t already know that the upper right connection was ground the picture would be useless.  I am probably offending some people but I’m about fed up.  All of the correct information needs to be gathered in one place.  Call it a manual or whatever you want but  someone who knows needs to take the time and put forth the effort to put it together.  And then all the incorrect information needs to be removed from the web.

Multiple people have explained how to decrease the emitter resistor in the mic amplifier stage to incrase the gain.   I didn't think of that, so just built a 1-transistor preamp for it and was quite happy.    Also had to do that for another transceiver I owned 30+ years ago.   Simple enough to do.    


Also be careful, the average power output measured by an analog scale is far far less than the peak if if you push the apparent average way up there....all you'll be doing is pushing the peaks into non-linear splattering.   


the older hams used to use oscilloscopes on their outputs so they could actually SEE when they were overmodulating.   Impressive amount of concern, I would say!    But I did get two of those type scopes for relatively cheap on ebay....use them to show people what signals look like in license classes occasionally.

If you look at that photo, there's a "clue" in that one terminal connects to the CASE.    And the legend that I always saw on the similar photo here:   http://www.hfsignals.com/index.php/2017/11/23/wiring-up-the-bitx40/   is also a good giveaway.

Interesting.  That picture has no indication as to which is positive and which is negative.  If I didn’t already know that the upper right connection was ground the picture would be useless.  I am probably offending some people but I’m about fed up.  All of the correct information needs to be gathered in one place.  Call it a manual or whatever you want but  someone who knows needs to take the time and put forth the effort to put it together.  And then all the incorrect information needs to be removed from the web.

if i recollect , a reverse polarity was also responding for voice but verey very lowand distorted.

I’m sure I have the polarity correct.  Someone on this list posted a drawing showing how to identify the negative terminal and I wired according to it.  I think the electret mic wouldn’t work at all if polarity were reversed.  What is being powered is an  F E T source follower.   I think I shouldn’t have to raise my voice to get 5 watts output on 40 meters.

Max,

 please check whether the mic body is connected to chasis ground.

i mean the positive bias voltage for mic should come on independent pin and NOT to the body pin of the eletret element.

In case you are using a dynamic mic, perhaps we need more gain and your need to shout appers logical.

I had grabed a taperecorder mic with 3.5mm mono pin.
 replaced the cable with 2+shield.had a small pushed switchmounted and wired.
 repalced the 3.5mm momo pin to stereo pin. Here is a image of my mic.The pp9 battery helps to imagine the mic size.

I heard Tom VE3THR in QSO with Dave K0MBT and followed them up and down in frequency. Tried to call just before they went to 3905MHz but no luck. Oh I did hear you both there but I’m using a 20 meter dipole loaded and I just don’t think it is up to the task on 75 mtrs.

Come on guys...my BITX40 is no Maserati but it had an excellent night. 40M peaked about an hour before sunset (my greyline). That random QRM about every 10-15 min might be some kind of radar I'm told. No contests or QRN tonight...S5-S7 noise floor on the big rig. Guess no one is doing laundry tonight in my neighbourhood!
Record number of stations on tonight between 1900 - 2100 HRS Z. Most were well over 5x5 using my 40M dipole @ 30ft. QSO's with N4DR Marc, N6ORS Keith, KN4AIE Rick, WI1B Ken, WA4THR Vic, WA2FZW John, KC1FSZ, AC9RZ Doug and picked a few new ones WA3O Mike, N2HTT Mike, W2NDG, KE0NXP Glenn, AD0RW John and WS4JM Jay.

Got my uBITX built and stuffed in a can, finally. Quickly upgraded to KD8CEC's V1.061 firmware. What a huge improvement from the stock version. Still not happy with the calibration settings so work in progress. I suspect the uBITX needs LOT'S OF MIC AUDIO from what I'm hearing up here so keep that mic up close and personal.

Yes, there is a relationship, but obscure. The data sheets are wrong. Some dummy mirror-imaged them in an attempt to produce a view from below. Theirs is an attempt at IC-numbering, but flipped end-for-end.  The diagram itself is fine if viewed from above, but the IC numbering should be taken with the 'dot' (pin 1) at bottom-right, 'notch' to the right. The extra gaps are the absent pins 7 and 10.

The ATMega328P on the Nano runs at 16 MHz, has 0.002 MBytes of RAM, is an 8 bit machine.

The RPi Zero runs at a 1000 MHz, has 512 MBytes of RAM, is a full a 32 bit machine,
runs linux if you wish.  Not only will it run the C and C++ code we have on the Arduino
(if you port the Arduino libraries), but it has its own compiler for it.
And a compiler compiler to build the compiler with for that matter (yacc).

It sells for $5 because it is of the current decade.
Whereas the ATMega382P is roughly in league with the Z80
I was working with back in the 1970's.
 
That said, the Nano is a fine choice for the basic uBitx.
Not all that much it has to do.

The RPi Nano would be good if you wish to implement standalone SDR, 
with a full waterfall display out to an HDMI monitor.
Or could be used as the Arduino IDE host when programming your Nano.
The top end Rasberry Pi 3 B+ does everything I'd want in a home computer for $35.

Jerry,  he's talking about the typical tuning.  When you turn it quickly its programed to make large jumps.

And Chris, please take extra care with your XP.  I feel it's an amazing windows system which may disappear.  Back it up big time.  My most recent desktop wouldn't allow me to use a Seagate cloned version.  I couldn't get the drivers to work under xp.
