I got around that by plugging the radio into a little "Honeytone" audio amplifier.

https://www.amazon.com/Danelectro-Honeytone-N-10-Guitar-Mini/dp/B000B6DHAS

it's available in several colors. I have one in Burgundy. That link is to one in Aqua. It has great sound for its size. If you want to use headphones, you can plug them into the amplifier rather than unplugging from the rig.

My v4 ubitx has low audio if I try to use a speaker, with headphones it is reasonable.

Hi Allard,

I made a new steel box for my uBitx. But my first project when I was about 13 was a V-O-M I built into a heavy paper cigar box. The radio will be better off and you will be happier if it is shielded and that means surrounded by metal. But we can tack some aluminum sheet inside that paper, wood, or plastic box where nobody can see it and that will work. The aluminum foil sold for kitchen use is awfully flimsy. I have had better service using the heavier aluminum pans that frozen foods like Lasagna or Mac n Cheese are packaged in. Easily shaped and sturdy enough to stay that way. Hint...I washed the food residue off them before I put them in my radios <sly grin>.

Vern, I usually attached both files..
See attached  - newest 7 inch for non E version. It will work fine on your 7 inch E version
You will be able to compile , just select your display type and size then compile to get your ,tft
It says test only because it has my latest changes as of this morning.
If you have any issue I can compile and send the tft for the non E version as well.
Let me know how it works

Re: Just built my ubitx, can't receive anything #ubitx-help #ubitx

kc0dws@...

Stupid question (s)....
1. Which firmware are you using?
          A. If you are using the stock firmware that came with it, I suggest moving to the KD8CEC firmware.
          B. If you are on the KD8CEC firmware, have you followed any of the guides on calibration and alignment?
                    http://www.hamskey.com/2018/05/frequency-adjustment-of-ubitx-si5351.html
                    http://www.hamskey.com/2018/05/how-to-calibration-ubitx.html
I have a V4 board and never had to calibrate, only do the frequency adjustment. Follow the guide on the first link and you will have no problems. It is an easy process and Ian makes it easy to understand and breaks the math down in order for dumb Hams like myself to understand. My first attempt at frequency adjustment really jacked up my receive and I was in the same boat. Ian's firmware and the uBitx Manager are great tools and he's done a fantastic job on them.

2. Make sure you have an antenna hooked up along with your Drake. The drake will help you confirm that you are listening to the correct sideband of WWV and also that you are on frequency when you tune in a CW station.
          A. Your antenna doesn't have to be very long or way high up. If you can receive a signal with the Drake, you can hear it with the Bitx.
          B. Stick to WWV on 10MHz and listen for CW stations on 20m.
          C. If you are having a hard time finding a CW station that stays put, don't worry, there is an alternative and we can thank the ARRL for it. Its the Code Practice Schedule.
http://www.arrl.org/w1aw-operating-schedule

3. Do you have access to a signal generator or know of any of your local club members that will let you grab some seat time in front of theirs?
          A. Having a signal generator makes things super simple and quick. Big if you don't have one, I'm sure you have a dummy load for your Drake.
          B. The drake will transmit out of band so you will be able to generate a 10MHz signal into a dummy load.
                    1. you don't need to do a full tuneup on the Drake, You'll be fine with 10 watts going to your dummy load.
                    2. I have a MFJ 300W dry dummy load that looks like a brick. I can wrap a 3 foot coax jumper over my dummy load and hear the signal on my bitx. Instant poor mans signal generator. (sort of) It'll get you in the ballpark and let you know that you don't have an issue with the Bitx board and that you actually CAN receive a signal.

4. Do you have a frequency counter or can get your hands on one?
          A. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Mine is an old Radio Shack one that I got in 97' when I was first licensed.
          B. I used mine to verify that I am transmitting on the correct frequency and the correct sideband.
                    1. Hook your Bitx up to your dummy load and place said frequency counter next to the dummy.
                    2. Make sure you set the trigger time up so you get the best frequency resolution .

5. I can't think of any other questions at the moment. Take this as advice and all with a grain of salt. These are the things that helped me and how I got my uBitx up on the air. I use mine mostly for FT8 and have been having a blast with it. Also, the Nextion display rocks and it's super neat. The S-meter he's cooked up for it is also pretty nice and adds one more cool little touch to the rig and gets it one step closer to what we buy off the shelf.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Re: Bitx arduino reprograming

Is the Nano actually ON COM1? Did you determine this using the Device Manager? With Device Manager up, you should see an entry appearing/disappearing as you attack and detach the Nano from the USB port. If you don't see that, you may need to load the CH340 driver for it. On my machine, it was not COM1, it was COM3. So it may be that you are specifying the incorrect com port for the device.

There are extensive instructions for how to upgrade/install the firmware. They show all the necessary steps, including verifying the port via Device Manager. If you would let us know what steps you took, and if you skipped some, that would help figure out what's going on.

Hi Elmar,

I guess you followed these instructions:
https://github.com/amunters/bitx40/blob/master/installation_instructions/0-software-installation.md

Please note that these instructions are for Windows10. I believe you have Windows 7, right?
Perhaps the COM port is not set up correctly in Windows 7, or you are using the wrong COM port.
From the error message, it appears that it tries to use COM1. But perhaps you connected the USB cable to another port (many PC's have multiple COM ports: COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, etc.)

First connect the USB cable. Then, in the IDE, go to Tools => Port.
Please try and select other COM ports and see if it works then.

I don't know if this is your problem, but you may not have the device drivers install for your system. Look in the drivers subdirectory off the main directory (e.g., C:\Arduino1.8.5\drivers) and look for the drivers program dpinst-amd64.exe. Try running that. You must then reload the Arduino IDE to activate the new driver. When you look in the Tools --> Board menu item, your Arduino should be selected. Using the menu Tools --> Port, you should see some COM port selected. If so, try to recompile your program.

Joe,
Thanks for all the hard work.
I bought a 7 inch screen and when trying to install the TFT on the new screen I get a Error,  "model does not match."

I have a nextion 7 inch enhanced screen...

I was able to take another.HMI file and convert it to the 7 in screen and that did work,  but it display only the 3.2 size.   I did not try to resize that screen. I just pick my 7 in model and compiled it and that did work.

Where can I get the 7 in HMI file?  Maybe I can complie that to work with my screen.

Thanks,
Vern AA7HC

Re: NEXTION DISPLAY UPDATES For KD8CEC ver 1.094 up

Good point. I was under impression that TJC was the last three of the callsign related to the person that did the larger sized display conversions. I used the earlier file for the Nextion 3.2" Enhanced (which my display is, with both CEC 1.094 and 1.095 with exactly the same results. The display IS a real Nextion ordered from them.

What I'm confused about is that in one place you say you have a Nextion display but then you say you loaded the TJC file. I don't know how they differ but I'd imagine that there are two sets for a reason and you need to use the files that go with the display you have. I don't know if you can load one's file into the other. It was just a suggestion of something to check.

And the key word is 'should'. I would not assume that they're identical, esp. if the one you compiled doesn't work correctly. The pre-compiled files are known to work. I'd try using them and if it still doesn't work there's probably something else at play.
