using a 60 watt incandescent is not presenting a 50Ω dummy load and you are risking blowing up the pa mosfets.
Build a proper dummy load with a few resistors., e.g. to get an idea

We used to use incandescent bulbs way back when most transmitters had a pi network at the output stage but not now with transistors / mosfets PA's.

I was able to see and hear both the CW and the voice transmissions on the SDR in the same room with me. The watt meter still reads below 1 watt, though. I have tested the watt meter using my 2 meter HT and it will peg the meter on the 5 watt full-scale setting. I have repeated the test on the 80 and 40 meter bands and was able to see and hear the CW transmission on the SDR. I am beginning to doubt the capability of the meter to accurately measure at frequencies below the 11 meter band although the instruction manual does not indicate what its frequency range is. It is an old Palomar Engineering Model 500. Tomorrow, I will rig up a 40 meter dipole to see if my signal can be heard. Sorry for the trouble. Thanks, Stephen

Pl ensure that your freq counter is calibrated with a known standard frequency, before using the same for calibrating v5.

Hi Bob,
I am having trouble finding complete instructions for connecting the AGC and speaker pre amp, have you run across them for the V5?

New blog post - Furlough 40 Hears the World...

My overnight receive experiment with WSPR.  Sneak preview - I copied Australia and New Zealand from Northern Virginia.

To quote Farhan: "Pete's circuits are fool proof"

And I'm the fool that proved it.

This receiver rocks.  Now I am turning to tuning up the transmit side to get a little closer to Pete 5 watt spec. Peaking 2-3 right now and making contacts.

Funtronics uBitx digi interface installation in V6

Glen Dingley

I just bought a Funtronics uBitx digi interface board from Elekitsorparts and I need help with installation in my ubitx V6 unit.
There seems to be no manual and so I watched the YouTube video and it looks like they are showing how to install it in a different model than mine.
Has anyone done this yet? I just need help with the 6 leads and where they interface too on my rig. Thank you.

Stephen KO4CVU

Allison,
Thank you for replying to my post. I have looked at the posts and see references to the low power output on the 10 meter band. I also noticed from some other posts that the power should be greater on the 20 meter band. I put up a simple inverted Vee dipole for 20 Meters. I measured the SWR with my nanoVNA-H and found it to be less than 1.3:1. I have a SDR dongle for my laptop so I set it to receive 14.286 MHz and turned on the “record” function. I had the uBITX set up out of doors to be close to the inverted Vee antenna. I tried both voice and CW transmissions from the uBITX. I could not hear either transmission on the recordings from the SDR. What am I doing wrong? I would appreciate any suggestions you can offer. Stephen

Re: RD15HV change to MRF136 #v6 #ubitxv6

Hi Bora,

If the schematic is just viewed quickly, it's hard to see that the normal transistor used there is the IRF510 not the RD15HV part.  The IRF510 does its job pretty well there and it's low cost.

the first consideration is how well your watt-meter reads power.  if you have another rig, and can get it to output something like 5 watts - see how the meter measures it.  more vital is measuring the ubitx power across its bands - do you have a healthy output on 80 and 40 meter CW?

second, is how well your chosen microphone can drive audio into the ubitx.  again see what you can determine on the lower bands.

if you must, W7ZOI has shown how we can measure power by building a dummy load with a silicon diode (and a capacitor).  this design appears in a 10m rig article in QST - micro-mountaineer 2.

carefully work this.  oh yes - there is a drive control on the board - but if you have nice power on the lower bands I would be tempted not to mess with it.  don't accidently adjust the bias to the PA devices - this is critical for clean SSB and the factory seems to decently adjust these before shipping.

A few of us have tried dc fans of every type on vers 4 boards and found the rf interference terrible. These fans when powered from the same DC power source results in terrible noise directly proportional to fan speed. We have not found the correct combo of electrolytics and resistors/choke.
In my case, I mounted the two IRF210's via mica insulators to an aluminum block in turn mounted to the rear metal back panel - no heat issue and no noise or fan.
Always was wondering about the fan noise so here we are!

Re: Nextion 4.3" Firmware?

Sorry Steve, it will not work with my 5" E Nextion so can't test it. Maybe its an incomplete project.  There are several different 3.5" and 5" HMI and TFT files that will work.  Maybe you will have to get a different display.

Hi Rick, many thanks for the info.

I downloaded the file: unitx_43_PD5DJ.rar . . . .extracted with WinRar . . . and the .tft put on a uSD Card on it's own but it will not work. Tried it over and over but the LCD screen just shows:

Baud:  9600
SD Card Update . . . .

Then stays in that state until switched off and card removed. I popped the card back in with the file I originally used with ubitx_43.tft and it re-updates but of course the display is still 2.4". Running out of ideas.

Anything else I can try???

Many thanks
