New BitX40 NO RX missing parts

Mike

Hello group.

I just received my second BitX-40 and it has No receive. While looking at the board I noticed D15 ,D16 and R 106 missing. I can not see a good reason for the missing parts and doubt it could have worked without them... Am I wrong?

Thanks!

Re: KB6QVI: Removal of C91,C92,R93?

Good.

That is partly a result of the design. Q7 is configured to always provide the right signal to the mixer no matter what the input (within reason). It also means that Q7 runs noticeably warmer than most of the rest of the board. This is common to all the BITX varieties.

Watch out for lightning. When you can hear it, it is time to disconnect the rig and do something else for a while. Lightning should never be taken lightly no matter where it is.

John,

I just removed C91 and C92 and didn't notice any difference, but you're right they probably shouldn't be there. It seems to be working good, I can hear the lightning strikes just like they were in the shack. Heck of a thunderstorm storm going on off the CA. OR. coast which is only about 40 miles as the crow flys. Thanks for your input.

Re: groups.io - was BITX 40 Questions

John Backo

Over the years since 2004, I have seen 4 or 5 serious eruptions on this list against Yahoo and its shortcomings. This time may be different.

Hans and Asher have a legitimate concern about the degree of embedding that has taken place -- there are a lot of people who expect BITX Yahoo to be there, myself included. I expect it also to be efficient and productive.  Unfortunately, a lot of the time it is not anymore.

But Yahoo is in the process of being acquired by Verizon, and there is certainly a question as to whether it will be there much longer, not to mention the possible imposition of prohibitive costs.

So, I would reluctantly vote for moving. Hans moved QRPLabs ,more or less seamlessly, and I have seen no trouble about it so far (other than the still-around old Yahoo group). Maybe we should do the same with BITX.

It will mean the end of one era and the beginning of another, though; we'll have to learn again a new way of doing things. Life does that all the time though. Hi. At least Hans won't be doing it solo... ;)

(Careful, Ash. Minima was very instructive for you).

Yahoo in the news:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/01/yahoo-not-dead-yet/

Yahoo's future in the possible hands of Verizon is questionable. Verizon
has been using a heavy hand in getting rid of it's old "unlimited
use" users in favour of brining them in line in less wide open user
contracts.

I belong to several groups that have already moved to IO and continue to
be in favour of such a change.

Yahoo is OK but I have had my struggles with it over the years.

Technically I am the owner of this BITX20 YahooGroup. I set it up with Farhan back in 2004. If people want to move the group to groups.io I can do that. But I would say Farhan should have the final say, he's the boss!
I recently moved the QRP Labs YahooGroup to groups.io https://groups.io/g/ QRPLabs . The migration was very easy, groups.io admin copied over all the membership subscriptions, files, photos, all the message archives, etc.. Everything is there. It seems to work very well, the website is quick and easy to use and the messages are delivered promptly. Subscription is possible with only an email address, it does not require an account etc.

I plan to be very mobile with mine. I already have
the Sherpa 100 battery pack from Goal Zero. That's a
100wh battery pack capable of providing either 12v or 19v I
also have the solar panel for recharging the battery. That
setup, plus the BitX should work just fine on my next
backcountry canoe trip.

Hi, this is really aimed at
Hfsignal.com but cant find any contact information so I am
posting it on here. I have just received my Bitx40 kit this
morning here in the UK and it has not traveled well!!!...the
plastic box is damaged. socket pins are all bent, PA
Transister and heatsink are bent, several of the trifilar
coils are bent and detached, the volume control(10K) is
totally smashed, the regulator on the raduino panel has
damaged legs...most of the contents of the plastic bag are
just rolling around in the plastic box due to the bag
splitting in the post so not sure if parts are now
missing...not a very good situation....I dont think the
coils are repairable and there maybe further damage to the
SMT components as well, so I dont think this kit will ever
work and is destined for the bin..I maybe able to salvage
the raduino board so all is not lost....The only real
packing that was supplied with the kit was a piece of bubble
wrap around the Bitx...you seriously need to look at the
packing of these kits and use a better box to send it
in

What antenna will you be using. I was thinking of using two Hamsticks mounted horizontally. What are your thoughts.

Re: DDS VFO from 49er project

DuWayne Schmidlkofer

I made changes from an original sketch for a VFO for a Frog Sounds transceiver. I did a while ago

In my original sketch the DDS frequency was set by just

Set_Frequency( current_frq);       // set the dds chip

To modify the sketch, I added a #definition for the measured BFO frequency
and added a variable for the VFO frequency.  Then it was just a matter of computing the required VFO frequency;

#define BFO_frq  11997600         // measured BFO frequency

int_fast32_t  vfo_frq;                      //  computed VFO frequency required

change in code was simply.

vfo_frq = BFO_frq - current_frq;      // compute VFO frequency
Set_Frequency( vfo_frq);                 // set dds

You should be able to make similar changes to the 49 sketch for use with the BITX.

These chargers work on 12 VDC so you should be able to solar charge.

http://www.headsuphobby.com/SkyRC-iMax-B6AC-V2-Dual-Power-50-Watt-Balance-Charger_p_1833.html

I plan to use a 14.8 volt 1800 mah battery

http://www.headsuphobby.com/148v-1800mah-50C-EZ-Flite-Pro-Lipo-Battery_p_1659.html

looking forward to getting the rig in soon.

I plan to use the LiPo batteries that I use in my RC airplanes They can
be bought for less than $20.00 and are available in 11.1 ( 3 cells) and
14.8 (4 cells) volts and a wide range of AH capacity. The chargers
charge each of the cells individually and stop charging when 100%.

I plan to be very mobile with mine. I already have the Sherpa 100 battery pack from Goal Zero. That's a 100wh battery pack capable of providing either 12v or 19v I also have the solar panel for recharging the battery. That setup, plus the BitX should work just fine on my next backcountry canoe trip.

It sounds like you need to get going on kit bashing it.
