Re: Ubitx 6.1 questions

Bill Peggy,
You are correct.  The display is not a Nextion display.  It is similar but does not have the same controller, nor the microSD slot to load in the screen software.  All of the screen driver and touch interface is done in the Nano on the Raduino board.

You have to purchase another screen.  If you have the full kit, then I would recommend the 2.8" basic Nextion that is available from the internet:
https://www.itead.cc/nextion-nx3224t028-1944.html

There are other sources.  Be sure that it is the "Basic" display, as that is the only tft that I have found.

If there are others that know where to get the source files or an "Enhanced" version, please send us the link.  I have an extra 2.8" Enhanced display that I could use on another board.

The display that comes with v6 is absolute not a nextion screen, despite any superficial resemblance.

To use the CEC software, you'll need to buy a nextion screen,  program the screen with the correct nextion files, program the nano with the CEC software, and finally connect the nextion screen to the arduino.

I think the cable only comes in the full kit with the case. However, if you did get the full kit, then I would have expected you to get that cable.

Is this supposed to be included in the kit?  I don't seem to have one.  The instructions for completing the kit mentions attaching it so it seems it should be included.

Just slightly off the topic but.....I received my V6 yesterday, five days ahead of the estimated delivery date and I have a couple observations.  Included with the basic kit (I want to make my own case) was a parts list.  As indicated in another post, there are no directions and I'm fine with that but....would it have been so hard to note on the board which two pin output was speaker and which was power?  Also, I guess the 'templates' for front and back are just that and not intended for mounting the display, knobs, etc. as the 'on/off volume switch shaft is either too short or the switch itself is mounted too deep.  I'm waiting for my case to arrive but wanted to get it up and running asap but the on/off knob cant be installed with the 'template' front end.  Still can be turned on/off with fingers though.  I realized that I don't have the proper antenna adapter OR my soldering iron to build one (long story) nor the speaker that I intended to use so will have to wait another week before a smoke test!  Any way, am anxious to get it on the air, seems like a nice little unit and I'm sure I'll be back with questions as I get further along.

Ok so what I understand from this is that the display i have is not a
nextion display although it certainly looks like one. Its got multiple
rows and is a touch screen and even has the spot for a memory card. So
what do I need to do to be able to use the CEC firmware?

The stock version 6 (v6) uBitx screen is not compatible with the KD8CEC firmware. The KD8CEC firmware works with the original v5 and earlier 16x2 line screen or a 2.8" basic Nextion touch screen to replace the stock v6 screen. There is a link on ubitx.net. I would start there if you are looking to convert to the KD8CEC firmware and Nextion screen.

If you have the full uBitx kit (including the case) and want to replace the provided screen with the 2.8" Nextion, be sure to order the "Basic" and not "Enhanced" screen. I had purchased a new case to put in one of my original v4 boards, and bought the 2.8" Enhanced to go with it. I was not able to find a compiled tft file for the enhanced 2.8" display. I also could not find a source file that would compile to the enhanced version either. Not saying it is not out there, just that I could not find one.

The display and links that Barbaros WB2CBA used in his conversion are for the basic 2.8" Nextion display.

Ubitx 6.1 questions

Bill Peggy <bnpmunson@...>

I just received my version 6 ubitx and on the display it says version
6.1. I want to upgrade to CEC firmware. Do I need to program the
nextion display as well. The display is already running and displaying
the stock firmware and I read somewhere that the firmware in the
nextion has not changed for a while. I would have to buy a memory card
to do it as I dont have one that would work.
Thanks for your help,
Bill KC2NG

Has anyone interfaced their UBitx to a Hardrock-50? I have one on order. I’m planning on putting a pad on the input that I will set to give max output on the weakest band. That way it should not overdrive it on the stronger bands. I will pickup PTT from the UBitx, and I am hoping to be able to use CAT to set the band. I’m hoping someone that has been thru it can give me advice.

I'm also interested in a few 680nH 1210 inductors—maybe one set for the fix and one spare set?

Can send SASE, and happy to help with costs.  Off-list follow-up welcome.

The rule that has helped me a lot is to always “make the circuit tell you where the problem is.“

That’s the best way I can express this nebulous concept of sleuthing through the signals that the circuit actually displays and finding an explanation for them that gives away what the problem is

We have dozens of this circuit in use over the past few years and although it isnt anything perfect, it is dirt cheap and it works reasonably well.  This same circuit has been used for decades, I am not the inventor!

until you know differently, trust the result of your signal tracing.  don't rule out the simple.  even a solder connection can look 'connected' when it is actually open (now how do I know this? ....)

one skill in tracing connection issues is to not touch the pad or part in question, but to check current flow with adjacent parts - and generally touch the pad - not a part.  take a break and then do a fresh examination.

BTW I have one of these boards assembled, but I need to add all the I/O stuff.  I have joined the workforce not going to work, so I don't have gobs of time commuting.

we are evaluating a digital interface as a club project.  I need to get mine finished as I am curious how effective the reed relay actuation is - yes I see we would need to make our boards and kits now, not sure why it wasn't a best seller.  glad to have one in my hands.

everyone trust the need to take personal action - let's beat the infection.  and use the time to experience something you have been blessed with.

Did you talk into the microphone? One would assume so but you didn't say. As you know SSB doesn't have a carrier.

Ok.  So received my uBitx V6 a couple weeks ago.  Assembled it, aligned it, and applied 13.8v power.  Spun the dial a bit and listened to ssb on 40m.  So today I'm ready to test it out on ssb phone and press the ptt button... the screen shows that the ptt is being pressed by showing tx.  But I'm not getting any output according to my in-line watt meter.  I turned on my other transceiver and tuned to same frequency and nothing on ssb phone.  I put the uBitx in cw mode, pressed the ptt, and could hear it on my other radio.  But again no power out readable on my watt meter.  Also, not sure if this means anything or not but the little LED on the included baofeng microphone is not lighting.   Thanks in advance for any useful ideas.

Let's see what that 20m dipole will do. Keep the other advice in reserve, including any opportunity for portable operation parks etc. Now if that adjacent cable weren't used anymore maybe it could come down.

QSK. I still have my hw16, but it wasn't used this winter. Its qsk is remarkable for a simple c.1970 beginner receiver. I know Bill has a pfr3 with decent qsk. The QCX is amazing with its hardware direct conversion,  image canceling receiver. I just built the companion PA for it. DSP some of the commercial rigs are amazing, yes some use dedicated processing not a pc. Certainly there are hobbist examples, the world awaits the qsx. My nicest simple rig might be this Cyclone from 4stateqrp.
