Evan,
yes, I looked, but it’s more about reducing consumption. On my µBitx, I can pull at least 5 amps. A friend gave me, a torus F114. I measured, 0.7 ohm and 2.32mHenry. I will test tomorrow if it removes the noise with the Nextion

Otherwise, I will start the calibration tests, but I prefer to use spectrum analyzer for that  because my ears no longer follow the acurate
My dog doesn’t like frequency changes!. LOL.

Hi Evan,
Thank you for the reply and all the other contributions you have made to the group.

Just checked Q90 and it's lost interest in life... B 0.898V   C 0,89V  and E 11.51V.

Replacements should be here this week. Fine tip coming for soldering iron and some liquid flux also on it's way. Watched some videos on smd replacement and will get to try my hand at it in a few days. I have plenty of suitable diodes and will look at protecting Q90 as suggested.

Thanks again,

As mentioned in original post, CW works fine gives 5w out on 40m.
Yes i am aware of static voltages. I will try to measure them without blowing anything.😀😀

Rx seems ok. Some stations come strong. Some weak. Antenna is EFHW in sloper configuration. Dont know how sensitive is the ubitx reciver. But i can definitely hear the strong stations clearly some 5/9 to 5/9+.

It occurred to me that your subscription may not have been approved as yet. Thats why its says you are a member but
till you are approved it wont let you post.

Gerard,
Here is a link to KD8CEC's blog on how to dim the LCD backlight.  It is at the end of the long blog.
http://www.hamskey.com/2018/06/nextion-tjc-character-lcd-current.html

He used a resistor(s) to limit the current and drop the voltage low enough to dim the display but not so low as the microcontroller stopped working.

R. Tyson,

The major differences between the model 4 and model 5 uBITX are in the BiDi amps Q10, 11, 12, 20, 21, and 22.  Those 6 transistors are BFR93W instead of the 2n3904.  As such the voltages there could be slightly different.
We are looking for normal transistor operation, so the relative values can be used.  The others are the same circuit and should be the same.

The uBITX does not need to be on to blow Q90, just be connected to an antenna and a strong RF signal nearby.   As stated earlier I would do the diode protection circuit if you do not take precautions to always disconnect the antenna or ground the input when not in use, or if you are operating more than the uBITX.  This includes VHF and UHF handhelds.

Hi all,
First of all...  I would like to thank you for posting the list of transistor voltages for a normally working uBitX. I note these are for the version 4 but would I be right in assuming that the version 5 would be similar.

I think I have also managed to kill Q90 so this topic has given me the means of checking it out. It is O.K on receive but no transmit. (Don't ask how I managed to squirt a bit of RF into it although it was switched off !)

I see a number of test points (TP) on the board and on the schematic. How would they be used and has anyone any idea of what we should find when using them ?

Thanks for all the time and help given to aid those who are in need of advice around the uBitX.

Hello,

Nextion noise suppression choke:

I find this answer on https://ubitx.net/category/nextion-display/
Talmadge Huckabee suggests that a good source for a Nextion noise reducer choke (2.5mh) is to get a toroid (FT114_43) from kitsandparts.com and wind 70 turns of #22 wire on it. This has about 1 ohm of resistance so it will not have much voltage drop (and will not dim the brightness of the Nextion display).
Has anyone tested this solution? I can’t do it right now because no ferritte FT114_43 at home

Hi

On my v6 80 m worked fine, but 20 m was warbling. I tuned and then both worked, pretty straight forward..

Best regards, Ole

What do you mean? The V6 should be supplied from HF signals already calibrated - At least mine was and did not need any adjustment - anyone building one should confirm that it works before changing the calibration.

Evan,

I need to take a closer look at this. Indeed as can be seen on picture , I had planned a 5v regulator to for the screen (With self and capacitors). My self may not be strong enough and the capacitors may need to be modified? I will do some research. I will also add a radiator because it heats up.

Usually happens when the joined email ID and the one sent from is different.
Check your email client if sent email has the same address as the one you joined.
It has happened to me.

Re: UBITX Ver6 Salvaging the Baofeng microphone for more SSB RF output power!

Hello Jer

The v6 kit I received in late August came with the baofeng mic.
Yes I only had to remove one surface mount resistor, no other surface mount devices were on my mic pc board,if yours has capacitor across the mic ,leave it in place.

Apparently based on other posts the baofend mics are problematic.

Re: uBitX V6 no transmit power #ubitxv6 #ubitx-help #tx

Aaron,
As far as I know, there is only one size for the transistor, unlike for discrete parts like resistors and capacitors.  I went to Mouser and looked up the 2n3904 and selected the SMD part.

Here is what I mean by back to back diodes:

NOTE: The pins are selected on K1 that disconnects them from the TP2 when K1 is turned on to put the rig in transmit mode.  Pin 16 is ground.

The diodes should be fast switching type.  An example is a 1n914 or 1n4148.  Current is not the issue, you do want fast turn on so that the base of Q90 is protected.

I have not done this for any of my rigs.  I take extra care to make sure that they are either disconnected from any antennas or that the antenna input is grounded through a grounding switch.  I will add them before I take them to a Field Day or other event where there may be other transmitters that I am not controlling.

Ok thanks for all of the help Evan. Just a few noob questions for you.
I have seen that the SMD stuff comes in different sizes. What size do I need to replace Q90?
When you are talking about Back to Back diodes, are you meaning in series or parallel? (If possible could you show me a picture of what you mean)
Does the size of the diode matter? I have a couple of different values.

Re: Installing nextion 3.2P

Gerard,
There is an issue with the Nextion screen backlight.  It is common on most if not all of them.  The issue is that the pulse width modulation used to dime the screen causes noise that gets back into the uBITX.  I just run at full brightness.  Others have done other things like install a 100ohm resistor and bypass capacitors in the power line to the Nextion or even using a separate 5volt regulator and capacitors for the Nextion.

As I said at the beginning of this post, it is common and not viewed as a failure of the screen.  Filtering of the supply voltage or a separate supply are the only two solutions That I know of at this time.
