Re: Ubitx and raspberry all in one. Digital mode FT8 - IK1ZVJ. #ft8

I had previewed a raspberry pi board for hf radios with a high end codec at the fdim. This is for a new radio that i am building to push the limits of what my homelab capability can produce.
Pictures are attached.
There story so far is that there is a very low noise 24 bit codec on a custom board that plugs into the raspberry pi. The display is a 7inch capacitive touch screen.
The radio is a single conversion, very low distortion superhet without any amplification before the crystal filter and triple tuned filters for each band. Nothing is casual about this radio. Even the power supply had to be included to have low noise rating.

That's awesome.

I just picked up a 'like new' Collins power supply cabinet for a KWM-2 series radio at a hamfest. I am thinking seriously about a similar build, with a uBitx mounted inside, but hadn't thought about putting a raspberry pi in there also... interesting idea.

The case looks like this, but there is no speaker installed:

The project stems from my passion for digital modes. The union between ubitx and raspberry works well. The LCD screen is mounted on an old CD mechanism so as to obtain automatic ejection. The project includes a dual power supply with a built-in power supply and battery power for portable use. the commutations foresee the functioning only of the ubitx, only raspberry, together to use the digital modes. On the raspberry WSIT-x are loaded for FT8 and FT4 and FLDIGI for PSK and RTTY.

The enclure is a rack 3U (9 cmx40cmx43cm).

I just finished my kit today too, smoke test passed. I have the Mic port and a couple things waiting on my antenna, but I’m very happy with the radio as well as Sunil’s case. The LED is where I’m stuck though. Not only does it seem too big for the hole, I can’t find any instructions or pictures of where to connect it.

I see the info at ubitx.com run by Sunil. See the category 2 construction ubitx case. Click on the picture. It takes you to page with more pictures, one shows where 3 wires are soldered to bottom of board.

I had to open the mounting hole just a little with a reamer, but I left it with a tight fit.

Hello,
Many options are possible to tune your AF level. obviously measurement tools like ocsilloscope tap directly at the output of the Af Amplifier or a spectrum analyzer is also very useful.
in another hand you can use also another RX, a SDR receiver or even a Websdr online in order to monitor quit accurately your transmission. When you find the correct level without distorsion spikes you just need to calibrate a vumeter with the suitable value and threshold. The UBITX does not have a AF level input monitoring
and without an additional device to monitoryour level it is simply impossible to know if the level applied from the Microphone preamp is not too high or too low.

in the picture below you will notice a little switch just below the vu-meter in order to monitor the AGC and AF input level.

I used a round file and once the paint is gone inside the led hole it’s a tight fit, but no chance of it falling out.

Big fan of analog meters. For bitx levels and especially in SDRs—to balance the chi. ;-)

Is it as simple as adding the(appropriate) resister in series with the meter + side and ground the meter - side?

And where would I tap the a V4 board for the resister going to the + meter?

hello,

You can monitor your AF intput with this device . You can tap directly at the input from the mike plug though a 600/600 transformer and in serie with a 10nf capacitor.

Kit-Projects Bitx40 AGC

Hello all,

We just put the Bitx40 AGC out to fab for proto type and look forward to having this ready in the coming weeks it will install just like our uBitx agc pre-built with install instructions.

Update:

Digital interfaces and outboard relay kits are almost gone! Relay boards will be discontinued once they are gone and we are not sure when or if the digital interface's will be re-run

Wow, not sure why the relay boards were slow to sell, either v3 and v4 folk could care less about spurs, or lots have done axicom surgery. Don't take by advice on kit marketing potential.

Thanks David for preparing my digital interface order within minutes of placement. No hurry in getting it out of your store.

My ubitx is clean through 17m now, so why not some digital mode action. Thanks again for supplying the community here. I hope our merchants on other continents are also appreciated.

Thanks Ed and Curt, these are exactly what I needed. I don’t know what visual block did this but I was searching all over ubitx.net for instructions on the LED hookup and Curt’s comment made me realize I was on the wrong domain!

my Microphone and remaining antenna parts arrive tomorrow, it will be a fun day!

encoder mod/ seperate switch

has anyone modified the encoder  so as to insert a separate switch to overide the need to push the encoder to select menus etc    many thanks   dave c

Re: encoder mod/ seperate switch

Jack, W8TEE

We've added NO push button switches to use as a selection object instead of the built-in switch. You still need to track which menu option level/option was selected (e.g., a State machine), but it's not that hard to do.

Re: encoder mod/ seperate switch

You don't have to modify the encoder.  Just add an SPST Normally Open pushbutton switch and connect the two wires from the second switch to the wires that go to the two separate pins on the encoder.  The 3 pins on the other side of the encoder are for the frequency encoding function and the two pins by themselves are the switch.  No mods needed to the encoder at all.

Hello David,

Maybe I made a mistake when I ordered the AGC print and mounted it in my UBITx V5.0. I am not satisfied with ho wit works/ or not works…If I look tot his

printed circuit I see much differences with my build in cuircit.

So  my question: Do I have the wrong one build in my Ubitx V5.??  Can I replace it fort he new one…?

Herman there are more then one AGC fir uBITX on the market.
Now with this one I know now 4 different.

For mine is the connection on the hot side of the audio poti. Where the signal is supplied from first stage passing a 1kΩ resistor. The AGC pulls down the hot end of the poti.
Others i do not know.
