uBITX v5 with 20x4 screen(s) #ubitx-help #firmware

I have built and tested my v5, tuned in WWV and it was spot on..  next on the list is to test TX..  need to get the antenna to a happy SWR

I was given 2 20x4 blue screens, it comes up fine with 2 lines by about 16 wide.  Is there a setting in factory firmware for the 4 line screen? CEC v1.121 still have settings for it?  Did I see a reference to using a second screen?  Trying to do what I can with what I have even though the nextion screen looks so cool..

Now sorted.. Sticky relay.

You have to do some alterations in the firmware sketch yourself. Line 1 is indicated as 0. Line 2 as 1. Line 3 and 4 will then be 2 and 3. Line 3 and 4 you have to add. And what data you want there. There is no setting that will do it for you as far as I know.

CEC firmware has support for 20x4.  I am building a 20x4 myself.

Re Faraday cage. I live in a steel sided and roofed house the panels are not bonded together but yet no cell phone service inside. That was not my question.

When I first got a radio going had rf on the mic. The solution for me was to put an rf choke at the antenna hub. You might consider that solution rather than trying to fight it in the radio.

The finish can be removed pretty easy, too easy from my perspective. Around the case holes it has chipped off on it's own. It looks like powder coating.

I’d say use whatever method solves your problem. There is a benefit in making sure grounds from connectors are touching the metal case and why not have all the case pieces bonded, it just helps all around. I have the black case with 5” screen. The paint is thick but scraping real good does get it off. I used a file at times and my dremel. Trying to scratch with a flat screwdriver was tricky. It really a no brainer if your starting the build. But I had everything already assembled before I thought to remove the paint. Not ideal.

Btw I live in a house made of wood and sheetrock. My cell service indoors is horrible as well.

pop click pop on tuning BITX40

John Cardoso

Is it a pop or a click? whatever it is it sounds like an AK45, VERY loud. :(
It pops (clicks) every time you tune a frequency and a digit changes in the display. Apparently my software Version is V5 (latest?).
Right now I do not have any instrumentation to debug this thing. Is this a well known problem? Is there a fix that is certain to work.
Thanks for any help.

you need to load the appropriate hex file  from the repository - there is a specific set for 20x4 - either parallel or I2C

Re: Installing BCI and Kit-Projects AGC

Joel Trenalone

Ok, so I added the BCI today and it works great. All AM is gone, and I was able to make my first contact.

Now onto  to the AGC to verify that it will work OK before the BCI.

One question. All the guidelines on installing the BCI include grounding the filter on both ends to the ground at C216 & C210. I only grounded on one side, because it’s all ground right?  I’m not sure why it really needs to be grounded in two places. Just wondering, and correct me if I’m wrong :)

Wow. Does it do same thing when on ssb? What about on different bands? Just want to make sure its not rf going somewhere. Did you restore the relay with a tap?

What would be the chance I could coax you in doing the same for Nextion 3.5 enhanced. Thanks for giving this your consideration and if so I can order another good 3.5 as the cheap chinese clone only partially works....
thanks

Thank you all..

Looks like I need to compile/download CEC v1.20 .. does it default to 20x4 screen as in v1.072?
I have not found a manual after v1.072

Is I2C a different screen or different way to talk to the same screen?

What a fun new adventure..

There should be one for enhanced if you search "Ted"

Re: Antuino and SWR

HI Ashhar,

I was able to get reasonable SWR values after calibrating the frequency using an ancient but apparently still fairly accurate Fluke frequency counter (hamfest find a few years back.)  I wasn't successful in trying to zero beat it, couldn't pick up enough signal.

The SWR still reads a bit high compared to other SWR measuring tools I have, I'm thinking of just modifiying the table in the code a bit to compensate.

Thanks for the help, it is an awesome diagnostic tool

Re: pop click pop on tuning BITX40

Try using an RC filter for the power line to the raduino. I did it with 2 of mine, worked solid on one and the other it toned it down for sure.

Re: pop click pop on tuning BITX40

Known problem since Bitx40. The Arduino takes  more current to make its change, creating a current spike on the power rail. The cure is to absorb some of the power drop in the Raduino's 5V regulator leaving it some 'headroom' to actually do its job (it's typically run close to its maximum power rating). Typically a 5 (4.7 or 5.6) ohm resistor does the trick: it needs a 3-watt rating. Put that in series with the Raduino's 12V supply, with a 100uF 16V electrolytic capacitor to Earth (0V) across it at the Raduino. That way the 100uF Cap supplies the energy rather than the whole supply, so that main supply is not drained for that brief instant. (Theory for the advanced: a 500uS RC filter).

uBitx v5 plus Amateur Radio Kits case for sale #ubitx

Bob Recny <n8sqt@...>

Hi all,
I have a uBitx transceiver kit with the gray Amateur Radio Kits case. This was just purchased a couple weeks ago. I just have too many projects and too much travel going on right now to build everything. I have just over $200 into the parts. Yours for only $175, including USPS Priority to US only with PayPal.
Here are the links:
http://www.hfsignals.com/index.php/ubitx/
https://amateurradiokits.in/product/universal-case-da-grey-for-ubitx/

I just don't have the cycles to really do this kit justice. One of you certainly will :-)

It's also up on QRZ:

Cheers,

Re: Antuino and SWR

David Wilcox

Farhan,

I just re read the limited instructions on the Antuino and it only addresses the “return loss” calibration. You left out a sentence about the “frequency calibration”.  No where does it say to calibrate at 10 MHz.  Please add this for those who need to know.

Mike,
The procedure is documented on hfsignals.com. You hold down the tuning knob while switching on the unit, this puts it into calibration mode. Choose Frequency Calibration, and set the output (as measured on a receiver or freq counter) to exactly 10 mhz, tap the button once more to save it and restart the unit.

Hi Ashhar,

I do have a fixed and step attenuators, so I could use my KX3 as a signal source to get a signal down into the -10 to -40 dbm range. I have not attempted the frequency calibration. I was testing the SWR at 7.1 MHz.
I have done the return loss calibration - how do you perform the frequency calibration?

Thanks
Mike

Download the v1.2 binaries and read the document on file naming conventions to find the 20x4 file you need to flash.
