The kit should have come with a Mic Element.  Did you try testing with it?

I turned it on for the first time.  Checked the current draw, which was easy with my Lab power supply with meters.  All looked good.

Hit the ptt on the mic, Display shows TX and I get 200ma increase on PA bus with not modulation.  Looks good.

Talk into the mic no Power out on watt meter.  I'm using a watt meter and dummy load on antenna.  Not Good.  Maybe Mic is not wired correctly.  I am using a Kenwood MC-42S Dynamic Mic.  I put a Cap in the mic line (violet) to protect form the power supplied to an electoret Mic.  Does anyone know if the mic element in a Kenwood MC-42S requires power?  The 8 Pin connector has 8vdc on the Kenwood pin out but I don't think that is for the Mic element, as I thought a dynamic mic did not need power.  I did mount an 8 pin mic connector on the front panel of my UBITX and wired it according to the Kenwood Pin Out.  Which I have verified multiple time.  I may be that isolation cap.  What do you think?

Hit the Keyer I get about 1/2 watt out on watt meter.  I think that should be much more than 1/2 watt.  Same on 80m, 70m and 20m.

Advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: No Power Out on UBITX

That may be what has to happen.  unfortunately the mic is borrowed so I cannot do such.  I have a mic on order but it is coming from China.  that may take a while.

Seems like that must be a way to actually use a dynamic mic and get good results.

There is a chat about that on this forum.  I will have to look at that again to see if anyone has that actually working.  I think it would be better to be able to use standard ham radio mics.  I think most are dynamic.

Thanks for your help

I originally used my D104 mic and the capacitor to block the dc and
I got the same results that you did. I removed the mic element and
used the mic that came with the rig and removed the capacitor
and my power went up to 7 watts. I get excellent audio reports
now.

Yes That is how I wired it up.  But on the picture in wiring instructions the yellow wire is not on the keyer.  That is where I connected the yellow wire.

Time to try powering it up.

I had managed to get one of the first batch and decided to order a 2nd one.  2nd uBITX ordered on 23 December and I just got shipping notification this morning (Central US time) DHL tracking says it has been picked up in Hyderabad and expected delivery date is Wednesday, the 21st (I'll bet it takes at least 1 or 2 days longer as it will have to clear custom. The first one took 4 days from shipping to my receiving it. so I'm expecting it more like this coming Friday.  DHL sure beats India Post though.  I'm waiting on a case for it coming by India Post that was shipped earlier this month.  No telling when that one will get here - LOL.

The yellow wire is connected to pin 4 on the Raduino. The keyer jack pin it's connected to is the sleeve. It's the pin closest to the front of the jack.

Someone help me be sure to get this right.

In order to remove this as a potential issue, I wired a speaker directly to the brown/black wires (I am not using any plug/sockets for speaker audio). Unfortunately this is not my issue. :)

uBITX Blank Display #ubitx

Bill KC5SB

Need some help!

My display is lit but shows nothing on the first line and just a bunch of filled in ‘boxes’ on the bottom line.  I have my uBITX partially wired up, and have been checking and rechecking wiring as I go.  I have the digital connector wired and connected and made sure that the 4.7 k resistor is wired into the keyer connection.  Dummy load is connected.  I have not wired up the audio connector yet.  I figured that I should see something on the display at this point.  Am I right about that?

Here are the symptoms:

the unit has power and the on/off switch works

blank display as described above

When the encoder is turned the LED on the Raduino flashes

When the encoder button is pressed, the Radiuino LED flashes

I did the ‘display brightness’ mod thinking that maybe the display was too bright.  I can dim the display now, but still no data is displayed.  I tried uploading the original sketch.  The upload was successful, but the unit still behaves the same.

 Any suggestions?  Thanks,

 Bill

Jake, Attached is what I have at the collector of Q7. So yours is probably fine. I avoided removing anything, instead I directly inject the signal into the base of Q7, that's probably why it looks cleaner. That did away  with most of the "birdies", too. Yours is working OK, right? If so, don't worry. 73, Don, ND6T

Hi,
I 2nd the vote for DipTrace.  I have been using it for over 10 years.  I have used several different CAD software programs in the past, both professional and hobby.  DipTrace is by far the easiest to learn and use.
