It's a AGC developed by Jim, ND6P.  I build it some time ago and it's working like a charm !
The AGC is audio derived, but attenuates the RF input, using pin diodes. I've used it on my Bitx40 build. The AGC acts like in a commercially build radio :)

Hello from germany, I also habe problems using a paddle. I habe adjusted the "two" channels with variable resitors and can messure the correct voltage. But the arduino Software produces a "dit" when it switches to transmit -mode instead oft the 'dah" carracter . i am interrested to your mod. Do jou habe a Schema?

You're welcome John, glad it helped at least one user.   BTW, I've abandoned the other 2 sections as even though they help, they keyer code using the ADC on the A6 line just isn't refined enough.  It is very difficult to send good CW with paddles using this so I just implemented the standard 4.7K Pullup to +5 on A6 and added the little 2 MOSFET switch.  This way I can plug in any type key I want, hand, bug or external keyer which I have.  Little piece of perf-board and it fits inside the uBITX hanging right off the key jack.  It draws so little current you can power it off the +5 line from the Raduino if you like but I pulled the +12 right off the on/off switch which is also close in my version of the uBITX.

If you search the QST archives for his call you will find two articles by him.  One for transmitting filters and one for receiving. The receiving filter document is the one you want.  These are the most common low pass/ band pass filters used by hams today.

I detected that arduino IDE has a command line tool, but that tool is tooooo complicated.

I created a small project I use to ease the use of the arduino IDE command line, only in linux, just for me... but it works...

I use Geany IDE in linux (it works in Windows two), I'm not a fan of the Arduino IDE as an IDE...

Hello all,
 With all the information that's being disseminated on the UbitX I think it would be real nice if somebody did up a repository into various sections by subject. Such as AGC, tuner, etc. 
 That way people could enter their information into various sections instead of being spread all over the place and very difficult to find with same questions being asked several times etc.
 Maybe they're already is such a thing I don't know. But if there is I would like to know about it.

My assumption is RFParts is a reliable source.  That's where I've gotten mine.  Given my employment with a semiconductor company that makes (competing) RF parts, I rarely go near ebay.

Hi John,

I'm using this Ebay item : 253088080650  ($2.27).
It is not really a compressor but rather an automatic gain MIC amplifier. It is very sensitive and your sound quality remains clear. You don't have to shout in the microphone to generate some output ... :)
In my Bitx40 it replaces the original MIC amplifier. The AGC function prevents overloading of the TX chain, so your power remains clean and within the limits.
I'm curious wether a real compressor circuit would still be a better solution for this kind of radio.

Boy would I second that.   I have been working on many projects in front of the bitx and it will still be several months before I get at it.  I’m sure I will want to revisit many of these issues.

Interesting.  Maybe I'll have an AGC-off... my usual PCB vendor is $9.50 for 10x PCB's, but $18 shipping if I want fedex (HK Post $6 if I want to for the slow boat, or $12 for DHL if I want the packaged delivered to me Ace Ventura style...).  I'll look at the schematic a little more closely.  Might be able to use the variable attenuation part as the current IF amp has enough gain as-is in the uBitx... A hybrid of the two perhaps?

Chris:  They look correct to me, both in the original schematic and my version... Emitter towards ground (pin 2 on the SOT23 form of MMBT3904)...

I think I have made a big mistake, or actually two:

The first is that I thought I was using T37-10 for the output transformer but in fact it was an FT37-43. As both are black and equal in size it took some time to find out (only that I had not used any of the newly bought T37-10's since they were all still present in the purchase package.) I did try the T37-10 but it gave no improvement.

The second is that I had not found the correct winding details for the transformer. I was using the trifilair setup which is used all over the rig and what would be indicated by the way the inductors in the schematic are drawn. It was later that I found a message on this board from Ashhar stating the transformer should be 8 windings input and 10 windings output.

I changed this and a whole new situation occurred. After all it is all about impedance matching.
At 80m I now get a whopping 18 watts at 3,75A overall rig current which is still too high for battery powered. At 17m it reduces to 3 watts. On all bands I have a reasonably good efficiency now so I am making progress and getting closer. I need to work out the loss of 8 dB's in gain of the overall TX chain when going from 3.5MHz to 18 MHz. ( 3 versus 18 watts) Thanks to the WA2EBY article I have some ideas. 

Incidentally, it would be nice to see exactly how your particular layout
differs from that of hfsigs. Can you upload a picture or two?

Well John, I will do so after I get some things sorted out. It's always a problem when you start with a nice idea and layout and after spending hours and hours of testing the end result looks less nice than it was when you started. It is mainly built in SMD style, using a mill to create the PCB lines. This is ideal for experimentation. I think my PCB size is about the same as the commercially sold one, but I use both sides of the PCB:

One side: Mic audio and speaker audio, modulator, crystal filter (with room for extra narrow crystal filter for CW) bitx blocks and all frequency converters, TX chain, LPF's and relays.

Other side: mic preamp, 3 holders for batteries, 4xAAA, 4xAAA, 2xAAA. (total of 10 penlights AAA makes 12 volts). charging circuit for these batteries to charge them from an external 12 volt power supply. (by splitting the battery pack into two parts and charge both parts seperately. I stole the idea from an ICOM CM7 battery pack) Also the speaker is included as well as connections to the arduino and SI5351 Adafruit board. I don't use the Raduino.

All is built in a single Teletron T813 housing. If all is well I will have a self powered uBitx with about the size of the housing of Ashhar's in his first uBitx video but about half the height. Google for the T813 or look here http://aprs.gids.nl/t813/t813dt_03.jpg for an idea.
I'll make some photos soon.

I think tonight I'm also going to have to break out my copy of EMIRD, see if I can find anything else in there.

I'm not super-inspired to design my own AGC circuit for this mod, mostly would prefer to use something known / proven to work well :)  Plenty for future reference though...
