Where to get 1948 Fiat Topolino parts/advice?
Ken Nelson
Hi folks, anyone out there have a source for part & info on how to service a '48 Topolino? Brakes are locked, so it's gonna be fun trying to get the drums off to overhaul the system! Anyone got a miracle cure for freeing up the cylinders which have stuck, holding the shoes against the drums (short of nitroglycerine...)?? Any suggestions/parts sources/tricksofthetrade welcome! Thanks Ben - at their prices I'd get all cyls sleeved with stainless. Best thing I could get now would be a photo of the brakes with a drum off - so I can see the exact locations of the cyls and how they connect to the shoes - have an idea for loosening things but depends on internal geometry - Ken On Thu, Aug 11, 2022 at 8:04 AM Ben Boyle <ben@...> wrote: Seems to be a start |

The Topolino name is used to refer to two versions of the Fiat 500. They are two very different shaped cars. Simca in France made identical cars sold as the Simca 5 and the Simca 6. There are some parts still available in France for both versions of Simca. I am currently in France and will be willing to do some searching on the internet here.

Send pictures of the car you have and list the parts you are looking for. I am returning to the US at the end of September and will be willing to bring some not too heavy items back. As for the frozen drums, I have used a chain lock wrench and Aerokroil penetrating oil to successfully free frozen bearings. You may be able to adapt this technique and WD40 in place of Aerokroil penetrant might work. Sri Welaratna On Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 08:23:58 AM PDT, Ken Nelson <citbuff@...> wrote:

Long term sitters often have stuck wheel cylinder pistons and locked brakes. Trying to pull the drum off pulls the shoes, causing them to tip making things tighter. Sometimes they can be dealt with by loosening the drum a bit (if possible) at the wheel bearings or axle flange, getting it to tip some, then whacking the outside of the drum with a dead blow hammer in the direction to drive the piston back into the cylinder. It doesn't take much movement of the shoe to free things up. To get stuck pistons out of cylinders I made a grease gun adaptor to screw into the brake line fitting. This always works. Of course if you can get new cylinders, you won't need to do this.

Thanks Sri - I don't think I'll need any parts, but appreciate the offer! Have a safe trip back! What part of France are you in? Ken, I’ve had to do this on Morris Minors. Rear wheel cylinders are aluminum with a steel piston, so electrolysis gets the better of them sometimes. Best advice I can give is, assuming it has brake adjusters, back them off completely. That should back the hours off just enough to remove the drum. Tap or pry evenly at points 180 degrees apart. Hopefully that’ll work for you.

I used to have a friend who lived in Nere', n. of Bordeaux, and E. of St. Jean d'Angely about 30 mins. Total pop. in Nere' was 500 people. That's where my friend stored my '53 Dyna X87 Break I imported about 12 yrs ago. Wish I was over there now! Have fun, Ken On Thu, Aug 11, 2022 at 10:40 AM sri welaratna via groups.io <sriwelaratna=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:
