Ciao,
I wanted to make everyone aware that Assembly Bill 220 is back on the California docket. Legislation A.B. 220 has been introduced to exempt motor vehicles prior to the 1983 model year from the emissions inspections requirement.

Alas, Fred, this grenade approach has been tried before, by the same sponsor, and will likely result, again, in no progress, but some replenishment of his campaign coffers. Randy Voepel has few friends in the Assembly, and perhaps for understandable reasons:

“Voepel at one point aligned himself with the Tea Party movement, saying that the Republican Party was too liberal. Following the 2021 storming of the Capitol on January 6, Voepel said, "This is Lexington and Concord. First shots fired against tyranny. Tyranny will follow in the aftermath of the Biden swear in on January 20th."

That might be the case Craig, but I think it's worth a try.

I'm not sending any money Voepel's way, but given catalytic converters now run between $400 and $1400 for my '79 X1/9, but $300 for my in-laws 2012 Toyota Camry, I'm willing to add my name to the list.  If I put 12,000 miles a year on my X1/9, I could sort of understand the cost, but over the past 5 years, I've put perhaps 3,500 miles on my X1/9.   I assume as time goes by, the cost of the catalytic converter will only continue to get more expensive and at some point, I'll be faced with the choice of keep paying for the ever increasing price for catalytic converters or sell my car.  I generally worry more about how my X1/9 is running more than our cars and keep it in far better shape too.

How often do you expect to have to replace the catalytic converter on your X1/9?

I’m on my 4th (I believe) and I’ve owned the car 20 years but it hasn’t been an every 5 years replacement.  I’ve heard newer cats need to be replaced every year or two.

If we assume I can get 5 years out of one and I drive the car another 10 years, that’s another $800 - $2,800 - assuming the price doesn’t change in that time - I’m willing to bet it will increase.

That also ignores younger drivers who might appreciate a nice older car.  Will they be able to afford to pay that high or even more for a cat?

Yikes, Larry, that’s terrible! Maybe the fuel injection made the difference on my ‘81 Strada, but the cat’ lasted over 200,000 miles. (It became unrepairable when the ECU failed, and could not be replaced or substituted. Grrr!) Our current pair of Mercedes, and the Toyota pickup all have over 100k on original converters, but yes, the problem comes when the models get rarer, and the replacement cost goes up!

What bugs me was having to give up my Peugeot turbo for a slightly different reason: a failed, unrepairable cylinder head with no replacements available. Could I substitute an engine? No! What if it was much cleaner? No!  (A more modern Fiat

The whole inspection system is very rigid, and with only one (notorious) certification shop available to do Special Certifications, there’s no way to keep our collector cars and especially Arcane and hoopties road legal. The current on-or-off CARB discussions aren’t getting us there.

Hey Craig, my son Karl is a Pug fan, does his own work after he survived my infecting him short-term with the Citroen virus, and I'd be happy to put you in touch with him if he could help you find one - he recycles a few Peugeots every so often while keeping some of them - He lives in Arlington Va. so combs the E coast - What do you think?

The whole inspection system is very rigid, and with only one (notorious) certification shop available to do Special Certifications, there’s no way to keep our collector cars and especially Arcane and hoopties road legal. The current on-or-off CARB discussions aren’t getting us there.

It is possible to do an engine swap. Must be from a later model year, approved for sale in CA, and carry over all emissions equipment.

I own a 1989 generation 1 MR2, engine has been swapped with a 1991 turbo from the generation 2. Also owned a 1980 Corolla with a later engine.

Full BAR legal on both, it wasn't overly fun as a process but in the end completely worth it.

Universal replacement cats are also available to be welded in by a competent exhaust shop. There are only a handful of approved models, which correspond to engine displacement, but they aren't that expensive.

Craig,

If you ever have another Peugeot with a cracked head, send the head off to Eriksson in CT and they can repair it.

Craig Parada

Hi Ken,
Yes, we’re connected on FB and the Peugeot group. We have fretted over the dwindling supply of parts, and the challenges of keeping not-quite-classic cars alive and happy. Like you, he has a great depth of knowledge, and a marvelous sense of humor!

The whole inspection system is very rigid, and with only one (notorious) certification shop available to do Special Certifications, there’s no way to keep our collector cars and especially Arcane and hoopties road legal. The current on-or-off CARB discussions aren’t getting us there.

Our current pair of Mercedes, and the Toyota pickup all have over 100k on original converters, but yes, the problem comes when the models get rarer, and the replacement cost goes up!

How often do you expect to have to replace the catalytic converter on your
