'79 VW convert elec fuel pump location?

Hi guys, anyone know where the elec fuel pump is mounted on a '79 VW bug? A friend's car, having sat for 2 yrs, but low miles - 50K - cranks fine with new batt, and after priming with brakekleen, spark works, and now w/o brakeklen will fire few times, sputter & die with less than a half gal. of new gas in what we think was empty tank. Car has cold start injector on TB, but no visible pump nor inline filter at rear end, but I haven't checked around the front tank -
Am trying to find the pump so I can pull it & see if it's clogged, but nothing on utube tells me where it is, nor any online details I can find. Would appreciate any suggestions - will open line to eng. Tues, try to backblow & suck gas thru it - to chk for gunk plug. But can't hear the pump when ign. turned on.

Hi Ken,
It's underneath on a type 3 and Rabbit.
The square white thing is the filter.
I used to have one but I think I gave it to someone a few years ago.

Those D-Jetronic pumps are used on early-70s Mercedes-Benz models (of which I have two) and fail pretty regularly. You should definitely hear the pump run briefly when you turn on (but not crank) the ignition.

"When you cannot hear a 2 second humming from your fuel pump after switching on ignition, measure whether pin 19 against pin 16 goes to 0V for 2 seconds after switching on ignition. If that is the case you should check fuel pump relais, cabling and the fuel pump itself. Cables on fuel pump can corrode or fuel pump can be worn."

This is great information. I have a similar EFI system with Bosch high pressure fuel pump and injectors, MAP sensor and ECU in my Vega Cosworth. Much of this information you provided crosses over for diagnostics.
I have been using Fuel Injection Corporation https://fuelinjectioncorp.com/ to supply immediate rebuilt/guaranteed components to other owners for ten years. Unfortunately they have not rebuilt ECU's (yet).
