Re: [CitroenDSID] Remember to use your Handbrake!
After a little “incident” almost happened at a Cars on Cole event, I also carry chocks in the (low compression, weak brakes) Amphicar. Don’t want no trouble.
(Automatic spell-check thought I should “carry chicks” rather than the chalk they assigned to Red Fred! Just lucky, I guess.) Craig-in-Richmond

I carry a tire chalk in my vintage Maserati, my '37 Cord, my '97 Ford F150 4WD, and my '33 Pu, plus my 2 Fiat 124 Spiders, and my 67 Silver Shadow One of my worst nightmares was arriving at my home to see the facade broken down by a run away car.. Bottom line; don't be a fucking dick. secure your vehicle when it's parked, especially on a hill. I now take the liberty of slashing tires that aren't curbed; for a good reason. I've paid the price; twice. RF.

I had a sort of reverse experience. After buying a Traction Avant and being told how delicate their gearboxes were I made a point, especially when parallel parking, to pull the emergency/parking brake on very firmly and leaving the car in neutral. As parking brake was on rear wheels the fear was that if a bumper was pushed hard enough by a lousy parker and the car was in gear that the gearbox casing could be at risk. After many months of ownership and driving & parking all over the place we took the Traction on a picnic at a hilly park. Parked on a steeper slope than previously, pulled the P brake on firmly and took foot off the brake pedal and the car started to roll backwards! Stepped on brake to stop the roll and was barely able to get one more click on the parking brake. Foot off the brake and it started rolling back again. Had to leave that spot for a flatter one. At home removed rear brake drums, pulled P brake on firmly and found that none of the shoes budged. The p-brake cables were frozen in the sheath. Ken may recall this as we talked about how to free the cables. All those times the car was parked on Citroen and Arcane runs, trips to stores, libraries, movies, etc., it was free to roll, but fortunately didn’t. Certainly dodged one. Sorry to see this nicely restored car get a bath. I always left my SM in gear. The handbrake wasn’t that effective. Also you can’t easily kerb the wheels on an SM, it drives the wheels straight when you let go of the steering wheel. Adrian

I was born & raised in SF. And I lived in the middle of the block, on semi-steep hill. You could always spot the flat landers, or the out-of-staters, as they never curbed their wheels. My home was hit twice by idiots who didn't curb their wheels. One time so bad, that it knocked my stairs down. In the UK, they instruct drivers to apply the parking brake at red lights, just in case they are rear ended! Curb your wheels, RF.

HOW NOT TO TREAT AN SM....... ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Scott Robinson <spr@...> Date: Sat, Jul 4, 2020 at 11:39 AM Subject: Re: [CitroenDSID] Remember to use your Handbrake! To: <CitroenDSID@groups.io> I live near San Francisco, famous for its hills. They legally require you to do all these things when you park: 1) Curb your wheels 2) Set the parking brake 3) Put the car in park, or in gear if a stick shift. They'll ticket you if you don't. A run away car on a steep hill makes a dangerous, expen$ive mess. /scott robinson On 7/4/20 10:11 AM, sam.homer wrote: > Very sad... and can relate! > > Last year, I forgot to engage the foot brakes on my DS....the car > rolled backwards from the garage into the driveway. > > Fortunately, my daily driver 'caught' it.... > > Very minor damage to the DS pumper, which I fixed last fall. We were watching the one in NC yesterday, but with the buyer’s premium and shipping, it just went too high to make sense. It would have been perfect otherwise. Gerard

speaking of go-karts. Here's the car that builder/developer Henry Dolger had built for his kids by his mechanic. It featured reverse, lighting, and a horn! It's all steel, and has a new Tecumpsa engine. The car was dismantled for paint, and it is not back up to snuff since, but is all there. Unfortunately, I can't hang on to it, so must sell. May be of interest to others. One of their requirements seems hard to manage even if the full max of 45 seconds is used rather than the suggested 20-30 seconds. There are other requirements as well but below is #1
