Re: Looking for Bolts

To bring closure to the hunt for Flywheel Bolts:

I bought a bunch of  long Flathead, socket drive M10, 1.5 pitch bolts and cut off the threaded portion leaving the long un-threaded shanks. Then tried to cut thread using an M10, 1.0 die. First two bolts started well but went sideways soon. 12.9 grade steel is not like butter.  But today I was able to cut five bolts as shown in the photo below.

The second photo shows the thread cutting setup. A bolt is held on my drill press, the drill is not being driven but used to provide a true bolt axis with the die held in a vise on the table and a pair of locking pliers on the chuck provide torque amplification. I started the operation by rotating the chuck by hand but soon had to look for mechanical advantage, hence the locking pliers.

I have Ken Nelson to thank for suggesting the use of a drill press, truly a reservoir of knowledge!

Before I got here I also had a friend, well versed in such affairs hunt for the required bolts in Munich Germany. He came up with the same discovery as I did here in the US, that flathead socket drive M10 screws are only available in 1.5 pitch. So I have more evidence to support my theory, that when Auto Union engineers tried to incorporate the Saxomat Clutch on the DKW they ended up changing the M10, 1.0 pitch they normally used on crankshafts to M10 1.5 pitch so that the flywheel could be bolted with flathead screws allowing the special clutch to be accommodated within the flywheel well. Those who want to replace a crankshaft on a Saxomat DKW beware.

Also try Olanders in Sunnyvale. they sell metric & sae

Mr Metric went under

And as a last resort try Fastenal, They never have anything I need but they can order stuff.

And lastly you can have some made, Bob Rowe in Santa Cruz @ Rowe Machinery.

Dick's absolutely right - do NOT open both doors at once, altho having had two '67 Caravelles - one in Mich that ran and one here that also ran, the Mich. car's sills had been filled with instafoam and painted to match the body.  I was new to them back then, and when I opened the RH door, noticed that the body latch was beaten to pieces.  The latches are when kept these cars from folding up!  The Ca. car I bought near SJ was much more solid, but someone might get lucky as I seem to remember reading that around 63 or was it 65, Renault reinforced the sills a bit to keep them from bending with heavy passengers.

Remember, all Renault did to make the Caravelles was saw the roof off the Dauphine and change bodypanels, but didn't reinforce the sills to account for removing the roof - until later!.
And if anyone needs info on these cars or help figuring them out, I'll fill you in on the 4 wheel disc brakes and their very strange calipers, but that's another story.  BTW, anyone know where I could acquire a head for an R16, with the carb and exh manifolds unified and on Pass side of engine?  Need one, and I just learned R12 heads are same.

I think you need to call the Newark location and talk to a real live person.  Tried searching on-line with no hit on Caravelle or on Renault, but don't trust that their on-line listings are accurate, especially for little orphans.

With hard top in place opening both doors at same time should be ok.
