The tax laws had a big effect on the Brit cars too. The RAC taxable
horsepower was based solely on the bore and number of cylinders. To make a car with
some power (and torque) but keep the yearly fees down, the Brits became
champions of long stroke engines. It took years and a change in the taxation
system to get them into the more modern longer lived short stroke engines.

Anyone know how cheveaux fiscaux was calculated?
