Simple cam timing:

If one has no timing data, degree wheel or intelligible marks, most engines
can be timed by splitting the overlap, the moment that the cam is just
opening the exhaust valve and closing the inlet. Determine that point and
set the piston to be at TDC when it occurs. Lower performance engines
generally have less overlap and the BMW R27 falls into this category.
Whether there is a lot or little overlap, find the midpoint of those two
events and get them as near to top dead center as you can. One tooth off
either way will be obvious.
